Stuck 22-36 Engine

McCormick-Deering 22-36
I am going to dismantle my "bad" engine. I have two of these 4 3/4 inch bore monsters. The one I am dismantling is stuck. I have tried things that have not worked...the usual soaking in various fluids. The image shows my access to the parts. I am now proposing that I loosen one rod at a time and then pound down (really up to the top of the block) the sleeve-piston-rod unit.
How hard will it be to pound out the sleeve?
What would be your suggestions as to what steel plate, other device to employ?
Thanks,
Tom

I had the same issue with a couple W30"s. They are a wet sleeve and came out quite easy. I made a tool that straddled the rod and contacted the pin bosses on the piston. I have since loaned the tool to a fellow, so I can't send you a pic, but it looked similar to the front fork of a bicycle. The fork part was quite short though with a piece of 1" pipe welded to it to pound on.

Try this. It looks like the sleeve protrudes out of the bottom of the engine just a little. The rectangular tube slips over the rod and pushes up on the bottom of the sleeve. It only has to move a little bit then the sleeve will come right out. Put some spacers between the top of the block and the 2" square tube to give the sleeve room to raise up.
