i just finished overhauling my 1950 super a and now the oil pressure drops after about 3 minutes of run time to almost 0 on the gauge first time i noticed the problem the gasket around the oil pump housings was blowed out replaced that and now no matter what i do i can't seem to get it to stay up on the gauge . can any body help. was working perfect before overhaul .

The problem is most likely in the pump. Be sure that the spring and piston are able to work freely within the bore of the pump. ALso check for flat surface of the end plate of the pump. If the gasket was blown out once, it is probably blown out again. Over gasketing is not the answer, getting the end plate resurfaced is. I suspect that the tighter clearances due to a rebuild may be creating an increase in pressure and thus, exposing the weakness (bad surface of the end plate) in the pump. I think IHC may have new end plates available but the last I knew, they were ridiculously expensive. A good machine shop should be able to make yours flat and such that it will hold that paper thin gasket.

If your end plate is even scored ever so little, you might resurface that and you can do it yourself - I did and it worked on a rebuild. Lay a piece of about 320 grit wet or dry sandpaper on a plate glass and sand on the endplate, finishing with finer grits until you have the scores sanded smooth. Use some water on the sandpaper occasionally.

tractor was rebuilt to factory standard every thing was in real good shape. the only reason for rebuild was it was starting to smoke a bit and i was just going to change the rings but we pulled #3 and the retainer pin on the side had come loose and broke a chunk of the side wall was busted off. to answer your other question i use the chevron brand delo400 15w40 i use it in all three of my tractors have had real good luck with them.

If you have a book for your A look up what they say to use and think about it. If my memory is right it was 30w and now the same oil would be a 40w oil. The oil you are using in it is for a diesel built after 2002 a lot different than a 60 year old engine was designed to run on. I have a 76 model diesel from overseas and 15w40 will run about 10 min and no oil pressure changed to a strait 40w diesel and now it holds 40 psi all day long. Oil aint oil anymore. Bandit

ok purchased new end plate new pressure spring and new check valve and gasket for IH put it all back together last night had real good oil pressure for about 5 minutes or so then once the oil got warm the engine started to run like it was pulling a load and then it would ease off and run fine i am tired of thaking this thing apart. i asked the parts manager at the local ih dealer and he told me that they had a engine do the same thing ahwile back and it was the engine bearings were wrong when the mic them they were off, the one's i pulled out of the engine were 0.010 and the ones the guys at the parts house were std i was told that 0.010 was another form of std. i hope i didnt destroy this engine because of somebody's word.

Standard bearings are standard. Period. 0.010" are undersized to compensate for normal wear on the crankshaft. Standard bearings are NOT 0.010" undersized, and 0.010" undersized are NOT standard bearings. If you installed standard where you should have used the undersized, the bearings will be loose, and might possibly have already "spun" in the connecting rods. Time to drop the pan, remove the rod caps and have a look.
