I am looking for a crawler logging tractor similar to the one shown below. I am aware that one does exist at Wabeno, WI but I am looking for others.

That's a rare tractor, and I doubt you'll find any for sale. It's a Lombard Log Hauler, invented at the turn of the last century by Alvin Lombard of Waterville, Maine. (I believe that he later sold the patent rights for the crawler tread design to Holt & Best, which later became the Caterpillar Corporation.) A total of 83 of these were manufactured between 1900 and 1917, and of these, only 5 are known to still exist. (Additionally, the patented track design was licensed to the Phoenix Company in Wisconsin, which made maybe 100 additional steam-powered log haulers.)

Volunteers at one of our local living history museums here in central Maine have been restoring a Lombard during the past couple of years; it necessitated fabricating a new boiler (weighing about 6400 pounds) to satisfy stringent modern safety regulations. Their Lombard should be operational in another year or two. Visit [b:ba1dd8e755][u:ba1dd8e755]Leonard's Mills - Lombard Log Hauler[/u:ba1dd8e755][/b:ba1dd8e755] to see their page on these early tractors.

One of the other survivors belongs to Harry Crooker of Topsham, Maine; they had it steamed up & operating last winter.

Professor Herbert Crosby of the University of Maine has constructed a web page which is a great reference for those seeking to learn more about these early tractors. Click [b:ba1dd8e755][u:ba1dd8e755]here[/u:ba1dd8e755][/b:ba1dd8e755] to see more technical info and photos about steam log haulers.

If you go over to "that other site," you'll find lots more detailed info on Lombards and their half-brothers, Linn trucks.

I have been building a HO scale model railroad with logging as a theam.

Those are Lombard log lodders and they use "Shay" engines.

The Shay engines come from trains.
