Rare tractor ??? Small rant.

Maybe it's just me but more and more i see people trying to sell a tractor, equipment, etc claiming how rare the tractor or whatever is. I sit back and wonder how they come up with these claims ? I know some are just cooks but what about those that truely think it's rare.....misinformed.....just stupid.....or what ? Maybe they think because it's the only one they own that makes it rare. Anybody else see this and if so does it make wonder about this ?

It's that (what you say) but many of them are not all that familiar with tractors and really do think they have something rare. Like a rare Farmall super C?? Right!

A lot of this comes from the younger generation yuppies who think tractors are neat but don't really know the the history and culture of antique farm tractors.

Well put i have often thought the same thing in respect to tractors for sale on here.

Some of the prices are nuts. Long story short !!!

I had a gentelmen contact me about a 54 cub that was stored in a barn for 26 years.

Ya grandmas "Hemi" car find...

Well i went and looked and guess what, it was for real.. It still has the orignal seat "perfect " as well as all decal , tires etc etc. It even came with it orignal bill of sale.

Now it ran but very poor , the tank was spotless but very very old gas .

It had almost all the attachments to go with it. Heres the funny part the guy was telling how rare it was and he wanted $5500.00 for it.

Not to insult him but i pointed out that the motor had issues from sitting and the bull gears were both leaking oil. I tried in a nice way to tell him that maybe if all the issues were resolved he might get it.

So i left him a card and told him to contact me if it didn't sell. Well one month later he called and i gave $2700.00 for everything which i think was a little high but it is is great shape.

Turns out it had some stuck valves and now it runs perfect.

So the moral of the story is that you just have to go look....

I think those that know nothing about tractors think that it's old therefore it's an antique. As an antique they reason that there couldn't be that many of 'em left and it must be worth a lot of money. Obviously they haven't done any research.

Mike; Give some of these people a job as a tractor salesman, and, give a bunch of us guys jobs as African tour guides... Would we all be in the same boat?

Same thing happens with old cars. Some people think any car over 20 years old is a classic and advertise it as such.

There are very few true classic cars. Most of them are just plain old cars.

The problem is that they don't do their homework before they list what they have for sale. I (being a retired underground miner) collect mining items. Some of the items I look at(ebay) are really common but because the seller has never seen one they assume that they are "RARE"!!! I have seen many items that sell all day long for $20.00 listed for $100.00 or much more. Do your homework. Reserch what you have for sale.

I'd like to know how many crooked shifter model WDs were made in 52/53... Before they actually started cranking out WD-45s.

(quoted from post at 05:40:08 10/03/10) I have a 43 JD "B" thats one of a kind,its the only one I own

Exactly......... Whatever we have is rare. Only one made (with that serial#)
