Farmall guys I have a question

I had a H a few years ago but never messed with the brakes on it. The owners manual is easy to get though. This site here I beleive have them. My local I-H dealer has them in stock also. It would be well worth the twenty bucks or so to get one. But I'm sure theres alot of guys here that will help you out with your brakes.

There are several of us who could easily SHOW you how to do it, but it is very difficult and time consuming to try to explain the procedure in just words. The owners manual is worth every penny. It explains the procedure in words AND pictures.

Apparently not any on here who will tell me. I don't have a manual, and I'll have to order one. apparently Farmalls are too complicated to adjust the brakes. My John deere all you have to do is screw in the square headed pin behind the brake drum till the brakes are where you want them. Pretty simple thing to do. I'll find someone locally who can tell me I guess.

Dan

A little humility will go a long way toward receiving help on any site. Yes, there are people on here who would gladly help others who they see as appreciative of their help. Just remember nobody on here OWES you anything... Gene

It is NOT a complicated procedure. If you have any mechanical ability at all, you can look at it and see what needs to be done. It is as simple as lengthening or shortening the linkage between the pedal and the brake control arm.

If it is an H built before 1952, and has band brakes, it is just a matter of shortening the link with the spring on it. If the link is at its limits it may need relined. The small bolt on the bottom of the sheet metal cover is adjusted in till it has a little resistance to being tighter. then backed off a half turn. It just holds the band up and keeps gravity from allowing the band to drag on the top of the drum.
If it has disk brakes the bolt spring system is shortened to tighten the pedal.
Pedal free play on both is about 1 to 1.5 inches. good luck, Jim

First thing would be to take the brake covers off and clean everything. Then see if there is even any brake lijjng left to adjust. Looking at the linkage you should be able to see how to adjust. You will need to get the linkage free first. The covers will come off easy.Always inspect the linning first so you done have metal on metal doesent make any difference what color the tractor is.

Thank you, I appreciate the information. I didn't know if I ought to screw with the spring tension or anything until I found out. Nice to know some folks will still help out when you need it.

and exactly how did my initial question give you the impression that I thought someone on here owed me anything? Did I miss something? I simply asked the question of how to adjust the brakes on a Farmall H and I got two answers of "buy a manual and read for myself!" Did you read the initial question? or did you read the response after I was told to go buy a manual???? Trust me I have helped a lot fo people on here with questions about John Deeres, and was glad to do so. I am no stranger to this site. It is comaparable to asking someone what time it is and being told to go buy a watch, I thought it was rude and inconsiderate.

The more I learn about it the more I like it. Almost everyone can drive it. The old JD is a little more complicated. (LOL) Thanks again for the info.

Farm Alls have excellent owners manuals and are not hard to find.Just looked at a Friends 8N Ford manual,it answers just about any question an owner may have.Cant understand why people have 2 grand tractors and wont spend 20 bucks for an owners manual.I have manuals for my JD H and 640 Ford.I would rather put new brakes on a Farm All H than do the same job on my JD.Most owners want to know how their tractors are put together and how to take care of them. The Farm All H has a simple brake system, just take the covers off and look.I have manuals for the Farm Alls because I worked on 2 farms that used these tractors.

I'm going to "drop" it. I just recently obtained the tractor and haven't received the manual "YET" and was asking a simple question! I know the rest of the folks on here are congenial and helpful, perhaps if I have another question I should make sure to write except you, greywolf and the other guy. Because I neeed information, not rude and sarcastic lectures. Have a nice day.

Dan,get use to it this is not one big happy family on here..I don't care what some guys say ..Often it can be one big click, other times very helpful...

I might add that I have no idea where my Farm All manuals are right now. They should be in the file cabinet with all the other manuals Ive bought over 50 years. In any case Im not going to hunt for them.
