Just read an interesting articla about Toyota trucks and insurgants.

they talk about how reliable they are.
An experiment conducted by British TV show Top Gear in 2006 offers one explanation. The show’s producers bought an 18-year-old Hilux diesel with 190,000 miles on the odometer for $1,500. They then crashed it into a tree, submerged it in the ocean for five hours, dropped it from about 10 feet, tried to crush it under an RV, drove it through a portable building, hit it with a wrecking ball, and set it on fire. Finally they placed it on top of a 240-foot tower block that was then destroyed in a controlled demolition. When they dug it out of the rubble, all it took to get it running again was hammers, wrenches, and WD-40. They didn’t even need spare parts.

That's one of the best shows on TV. In my opinion. They do some crazy truff with cars.

They really, really tried to kill that truck! after each indignity, their mechanic would come over with the WD40 and a few wrenches and within minutes it would be going again. Couldn't kill it!

The HiLux has been around forever and sold all over the world. It does have a reputation for reliability, but I'd note that Top Gear did that stunt with with a fourth-generation truck from the 1980s. No fancy electronics or emissions.

You're not going to take a new Tacoma (seventh-generation), drop in the ocean, and get it running with baling wire.

A few years back we got a new Hino which is Toyotas heavy truck line. Built in West Virigna and with standard off the shelf parts common to the US trucking industry...... its been a great unit.
Excellent fuel milage, reliable, comfortable, its been a real work horse.
Added another Hino 338 to fleet a few months ago and all ready seeing better fuel milage than the 08 model.

Before I get flamed for not buying "American" let me say I am a Ford guy and own a small fleet of diesel powered Fords but these Hino's are every bit the truck a new Ford is and maybe even more.

You are having amazing luck with Hinos....I started with a fleet of 5 3 years ago and have swapped all but 2 out for Isuzus. Great looking box trucks, but the worst truck investment i have ever made from a reliability standpoint- plus poor dealer network and lousy parts availability

they also had a positive Range Rover experience in South America...they are some lucky dudes!

Best car show ever! 'I AM THE STIG!"

The great thing about that show is that the hosts are NOT mechanics - it's not a how-to show, it's a show about using (and abusing) cars. And sometimes, some pretty dang nice cars!

i didnt see the show, but its probably true, here in the mountains there are several toyota trucks and a land cruiser from the 70's and '80's that are in amazingly rough shape, 1 i personaly know its owner, the spedometer broke at 345,000 miles and that was 2 years ago, all still run great, as long as you can fit in it [ i dont] and dont need to pull a trailer there great little rigs

I thought about buying a Toyota once, then thought about December 7,1941 and what my Dad went through in the South Pacific and bought a FORD. Some things I just can't (and no one else should)forget.

My son and I each bought New Tundras in 2008. Within 1 1/2 year both of our tailgates were separating at the seam on each end. Neither truck had been abused. The most weight that was ever on my tailgate was me, 255lbs. When I asked about warrantee, they asked if I ever sat on my tailgate. I said yes and they denied warrantee. Weight limit on a Toyota tailgate is 187 lbs. We were also told that this was an uncommon problem. We found six more with bad tailgates on their lot before we left. We quit looking after checking out nineteen others and finding eighteen bad tailgates. Neither one of us own a Toyota anymore.

Exactly!!

Top Gear is a must see show and that episode is one of the best.

As far as the South Pacific comment, well my grandfather fought in Europe and later on in life ended up owning a VW and a Mercedes. My father and I have both owned VWs since then.

I'm not to fond of that little skirmish that happened down south either, but I don't hold anyone that lives down there accountable for it.

Sometime you just need to get over the past. I buy the best product I can get for my money, and if it's a Toyota then so be it.
