Been playing with a critter here in my little office down stairs, every once in a while ya see a little gray flash so I set a live trap.critter was too light to set it off.
I kept saying I was trying to fatten it up as he took the bait within 5 min of setting trap. Last night a lone he took two different settings of a quarter square of gram cracker, and peanut butter.--so I reset it and used a kinda heavy pen to help add weight to the trigger mechanism, two min later I had my prize. What ??? Looked like a malformed mouse long nose and no tail. But he even seemed kind of friendly -not scared, just curious
Found it through googling it was called a "Least Shrew" little critter is also protected by the Pa Game Commission, I did let him go --- Hope the Hawks don't see him. I have never in my 65 years seen one I thought they were southern creatures.
Least Shrew

Probably pretty blind and navigating by smell. Couldn't figure out that you could be an enemy.

Catch them every once in a while in my barn, toolshed. Didn"t know they were protected. Don"t tell them about that.
Understand they are pretty scrappy lttle guys.
Not, "can I take "em?" but "Lemme at "em!"

Lot of shrews around here- main thing to remember is that they're fearless- they kick a$$ and take names. When you're that little, the best defense is a good offense. A mouse will try to get away; shrew will do the David and Goliath thing.

Don't mess with them- just dispatch and excavate. If they get their tiny little teeth into your finger, they'll turn you every which way but loose.

how do i tell my cats they can't kill shrews?
i hope that law is only for pa.
cats seem to have ran out of mice and every once in a while bring in a shrew i have nver seen only parts of one like you would a mouse they kill them and leave them whole

Pound for pound, I bet the shrew is the meanest, baddest animal on Planet Earth. If it were the size of a woverine or badger, it'd not only kick their butts, it'd kick a grizzly bear's butt. Those things are mean. I seen someone put one in a box with a mouse four times its size, and it was brutal. It tore that mouse to shreds and killed it in no time. Brutal. It was just brutal. If you can catch one and don't like your mother-in-law, feed it Mighty Dog until it gets the size of a Guinea Pig, and then lock them into a room together, and it will be brutal, but mother-in-law problem will be over. Just make sure the little Mrs. isn't home when you do it though, or you'll be sleepin' on the couch for awhile.

Cats will kill shrews but they don't eat them, I have noticed that here. Maybe they taste bad. By the way, why do some of you guys over there like to kill everything that moves? Don't get me wrong I hate rats and mice but shrews are good little animals to have around, they won't go in your barns and eat your grains but they do eat a heck of a lot of insect pests for their size. (They have to eat their own weight in food per day! )Shrews are not related to mice and rats at all, they are insectivores not rodents.
