3 Pt Log Splitter

I've been shopping for a 3 Point log splitter, to be driven by my tractors remote Hyd. Don't need anything fancy, short winters here. Can't seem to find a reasonably priced used unit anywhere near my area.

Anybody have any experience with this unit from Agr-Supply?

I like the vertical setup a lot better - but that's because much of my wood is too big to lift. If you've got small wood, it probably doesn't matter.

I use a PTO pump. Works much nicer that way unless you've got real good hydraulics on your tractor at low RPMs. Many tractors only have 7-12 GPM pumps and have to run at 2000 RPM to be useful on a splitter. With a PTO pump, you can split all day long with the engine running just above idle speed (if a full size tractor).

Yea, its a fairly new tractor, John Deere 4510, got pretty good hydraulics. Runs the backhoe attachment very well just above idle. We have mostly smaller wood. This will get ocaisional use, trying to avoid spending lots of money, and having another engine with bad gas, clogged carb etc etc.... But I'm too old for swinging a maul..

Yes, a 4510 can pump 10 GPM just above engine idle.

You better make sure though, that the splitter can be used with a closed-center hydraulic system. Many cannot, and that's what your Deere has. I don't see any mention of it in that ad.

Some splitters come with either option, some come with convertible control valves (or open or closed-center), and some only work with certain systems.

Thanks, actualy my 4510 is open center, configured for the JD 48 backhoe attachment I have. Also use the same remote ports for a open center valved hyd center link.

Sorry. My comments were for a farm-tractor that is Deere powered, not a Japanese-powered compact with a Yanmar.

Just about all Deere full-size tractors are closed-center. When you said 4510 (which I've never heard of), I assumed it might be some Canadian variant of a 4520 - which IS a full-size tractor.

I haven't kept up with the bunch of Yanmar-powered tractors Deere is selling.

Ive used one for many years. Run it off a JD 520 and a IH 756. Little slow on both tractors because I am using a 5 inch cylinder. A 4 or 3.5 would run a lot faster. If your tractor does not have a detente valve you may want to run flow to a valve on your splitter. ED

Could just build your own; they're pretty straight-forward. Got one I've been using about 35 years; have used it on numerous 20 and 30 series tractors.......running about 1200-1500 rpm. Doesn't use a lot of diesel at that speed, but if I were building one today, I'd probably start with a small hp gasoline engine. I'd post a picture, but the last 2 times I was on Photobucket, I got a virus and the second time, I wound up having to reformat my hard drive........after trying everything I knew or ever heard of to get it cleaned up. I may try another photo-hosting site; tinypic, maybe?

Check out Split-Fire , we have one, they are priced great new and spilt both directions so no waiting for the return stroke on the cylinder.

3 pt hitch remote is model 3203 now.
