carb adjustment

I plowed the snow in our drive way with my VAC yesterday, but she wasnt running to well. i had to keep the choke 3/4 on the whole time. so today i tried adjusting it, and the engine seemed to run the exact same as long as the load needle was more than half way from the seat. then i took the needle out, and it ran just fine. so without any needle seems to be the way to go. My guess is the float is sticking, but dont want to dig into it until i get a second opinion. any ideas? does anybody else just run their tractor without the load needle at all? thanks in advance.

Might also be sucking air through bad packing of choke shaft, wiggle the linkage, and see how loose the choke shaft is in its bore.

First off, are you running an ethanol blend or have you added "dry gas", either of which should prevent fuel system freezeup?

There's a jet BELOW the "load" needle and a passage from there that leads to the bottom of the float bowl.

If that jet or passage are clogged with ice/water/crud/debris/varnish the engine will be short of fuel.

Of course, if gas flow is restricted anywhere between the gas tank and the float bowl the engine will starve for fuel, as well.

The test is to (BE SAFE and prepared to catch the flow of gas in a container) remove the bottom 1/8" pipe thread plug from the float bowl. There will be a quick flow of gas as the bowl empties, then there MUST be a steady flow of gas adequate to support the engine under full load.

If that flow is adequate, the trouble is IN the carb, if not it's in the sediment bowl area or in the brass screen at the carb inlet elbow.

Not a float problem but a clogged up vent for the float bowl area of the carb. Having the main jet out vents the float bowl so it then runs ok. You need to rebuild that carb which is not all that hard to do and the kit is only about $20
