I bought an H Tractor about a year ago it ran fine for what i needed it for. Within the last couple of months it would run for about 20 minutes and now it wont make it 5 minutes. Thought it might be overheating so i replaced the thermostat. I replaced the coil on it cause i am running a 12v battery and replaced the sparkplug wires. Have not replaced spark plugs yet, but it misses bad right now and then quits. It never ran like this before its like it slowly started to run for less and less amounts of time. I am not an expert on tractors this is my first one but i am slowly getting an education and would appreciate any help. Thanks Rick

Does it have one of those inline gas filters on it? It's not supposed to have. They are the culprit for a lot of problems when somebody cobbles one on to one.

My H started acting up similarly a few years ago, and it turned out the vent in the gas cap wasn't venting, creating a vacuum in the tank.

When it acts up, loosen the gas cap and see what happens. If that's the problem, fine. If not, at least you've eliminated that as a possible.

Shoulda mentioned it could be the ignition coil. They'll act up that way at times if they're failing.

One like that can be many things and throwing parts at it is not the way to fix it. I would start off by checking spark. Your spark needs to be a blue/white and it needs to jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have good spark then pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb , catch the gas and let it flow for 5 minutes or so. You need to have a good steady flow of gas there. To reason for catching it. #1 is to make sure it is not full or dirt/rust/water and #2 it just plain costs to much to wast. If you do not have a good steady flow of gas work back till you find where you loose the flow

For what it's worth,

The little fiber rubbing block on the points will wear down causing the opening of the points to diminish.

The dwell, in turn, then gets larger and larger until she starts to miss. First on one cylinder, then two, etc., etc.

Pretty soon, it won't run at all.

First thing would be new plugs the wires dont stop when warm you said it misses first thing you replace is the plugs.

"Misses bad and then quits"...d'you mean misses as soon as starts, or starts, runs smooth for a little bit, then misses worse and worse until it dies??
As mentioned, check plugs (Google fouled plugs or similar and find pix of what different engine/carb etc problems make plugs look like).
Any number of things could cause, as already mentioned; was new coil 12V?? When quits again see how hot coil feels (be careful).
Advise if none of above helps; everyone loves a mystery, if it's someone elses'!!

I agree with a gas issue. Maybe the screen, where the fuel line goes into the carb. Those extra inline filters are a pain. Also check that the manifold is bolted on tightly.

You mention you thought it might be overheating...Now, did the temperature gauge SAY it was overheating? Or did you even look at the gauge?

If the gauge isn't working...REPLACE IT. I had a friend who "cooked" a newly-built engine a number of years back because he took his car to town without hooking up all the gauges...especially the temperature and oil pressure gauges.

These gauges have a purpose. Keep 'em working, and they can actually help you diagnose problems...or prevent you from wasting your money "fixing" things that aren't broken.

I took off air cleaner and it had a bunch of gunk in it runs without stopping still runs rough going to clean it out. My question is the air cleaner cap has a oil level do i need to put oil at that level when i put it back on. Like i said i am at kindergarten level with tractors. Thanks Rick

I went through gas lines and cleaned air cleaner put new plugs in it the one thing i noticed is my amp guage is reading a discharge and when i try to put it in gear it dies any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
