New Water Heater

I had a Sears Survivor nat gas fired 40 gallon water heater for almost 19 years that I bought in 1992.
It started leaking this past Sunday and I called Sears and since they had a record of it and I still had the cash register receipt the lady told me the water heater would be replaced free of charge. She was in Iowa and made arrangements with our local Sears store for me to pick up the new water heater. She also called back and said to keep all the paper work on the old Survivor heater since this water heater will be replaced free if it ever fails. It's the Power Miser 12 water heater and it works fine. I never had an appliance that had this type of warranty. Hal
PS: I paid $389.00 for the Survivor from Sears Surplus and it was reduced from $800.00. The replacement heater sells for $549.00.

Had pretty much the same thing happen to me this year with the electric one I had. It was under warranty still and stopped working as it should so they said go back to Lowes with it and get a new one. So yep I to have a new water heater but I'll bet this one will not last past its warranty since it is only a 6 year one.

"Lifetime warranty" is a great marketing ploy- makes the shopper think (1) this must be a great store, to offer that, and (2) must be a high quality item. Neither is necessarily true- most require that you keep the sales slip, which almost no one does. Wife always buys lifetime garden hoses (we use a lot of em)- haven't yet been able to realize on the warranty, because she can't ever remember which hose goes with which receipt, and its just more trouble than its worth.

The exception is Craftsman tools, where you just take the tool in (without the slip) and they replace it, no questions asked.

At one time Sears offered lifetime warranty on their exhaust systems. I was in their store and they said a man came in with a Ford Thunderbird with dual exhausts that need replacing and he had his receipt. Got another new exhaust system free. I have an old Mercury Cougar and I've changed the shocks and struts with Monroe parts. The store I bought them from went out of business so I called Monroe and they wanted a copy of my original receipt faxed to them so I did and in about a week I received new struts and shocks. They even paid the shipping. It pays to keep those receipts. Hal

I had the muffler replaced on our 1995 Buick, by Midas Muffler. Got a "Lifetime" muffler put on it. Muffler lasted 4 years. Took it back, got free new one, installed. Lasted 4 years. Got it replaced too-free. Manager asked how long i intended to keep the car! I told him, until i quit getting free mufflers, from you folks!

Similar story. Go back to 1970, I had a 1968 Barracuda, Formula S, fastback coupe with the High Performance 383. Large 3 1/2 inch exhaust and pipes. It ate the mufflers in 15k miles. Took it to Sears for new mufflers. Took it back at 35k, Back at 50k, back at 80k. Guy said
aren"t you ever going to sell this car? I said "nope"
And I haven"t I "co-own" the car with my nephew since 1988. He restored it and has had it back for three more sets. He still owns it but only drives it a few miles a year.

Most of those warranties are figured on the basis that you'll sell, wear out, or otherwise eliminate the car before the muggler goes bad. I have a 1984 diesel truck on third set of replacement mufflers. They give me the mufflers, but get me good for the pipes - not guaranteed!

A close friend"s wife was bought a new Ford Maverick when she started to drive. They got married just as soon as she graduated high school. She always worked right in the town they live in. So short drives to work. Therefore mufflers and batteries don"t last long. I talked to him a few weeks ago and he was on the eleventh Monroe muffler, ten under warranty. The car only has 39,000 miles on it. It is an early 1970 model. Ugly light green color.
