Well what good timing. My brother and I are done working for the year, until next April 11. My brothers friend has a 45 acre wood lot he is gonna log, foresster marked the trees for him. Theres alot of white oak, red oak and hickory. But its on a pretty steep hill. Well we have our atv;s a 1920 ford tractor and a JCB 4wd backhoe to use, so in exchange for helping my brothers friend, hes gonna give all the firewood we want, tops, trees that are in the way, dead trees, ect. Im gonna start helping this comming week, as they have already started, and asked for my help today, but it all depends on the weather???. The guy needs 70 logs to make a truck load, he said he has 330 saw logs marked in there, so plenty of fire wood to go around. I will try to post some pics if we can get in there next week. j

Have fun but be careful fooling around on that hillside. Might be a good time to think about ROPS on the tractors.

Well at least the ground is froze, not much if any snow, use care and be safe, good time to get started on it, be darned if I could just gather all the wood that is down or needs to come down at both our places, still have quite a bit from that '08 ice storm, never enough time or equipment as I always say :) !

Firewood in my area is pretty simple. You can buy it cut, split, and delivered for 40 bucks a cubic meter for seasoned hardwood, you can go to the forest meister and he'll drive you through the woods and point out logs that are already drug up and piled next to the access road that you just have to cut up and take home for 5 bucks a cubic meter for soft and 10 bucks for hardwood. And there are 3 sawmills within 5 miles that will deliver slabs in 4 cubic meter bundles for 20 bucks. Even if you own woods in most of this area, the forest meister has to come and mark the trees that you can cut.

Dave, I dont wanna sound stupid, but I have no idea what a cubic meter is? over here we get wood buy the cord, or face cord. A cord is 4x4x8 and sells for anywere from $160 cut split delevered green to $250 seasoned. A tri-axel load of log lenght is about 7 cords and $650-$700 depending on the logger.

3'4"x3'4"x3'4" (1meterx1mx1m). Delivered is the most accurate but when you get the sawmill to deliver or go out with the forest meister they are pretty generous in your favor. The forest meister likes Jack Daniels.

No, I really dident know. I dont pay any attention to metric, and refuse to learn it. Ya I have metric tools, but I like feet, inches, pounds and tons. My father said when he was in school they kept saying the world is gonna go to the metric system. Well we still have standerd, but I know alot of things are metric now. J

You might want to consider leasing/renting a cable skidder for the job. Steep hills are bad enough with a 100ft winchline to work with, trying to drag logs around a steep grade with a tractor is difficult and dangerous. I suppose it all depends on what version of "steep" we're talking about though.

Hello JAyinNY,
looks like you will be busy for awhile.
I guess you don't LIKE the metric system?
Most people don't.But let me say this:
There are 16oz to a pound.
36in. to a yard.
5280 feet to a mile.
128 oz to a gallon.
Do you see a pattern?
A meter, closest thing to a yard,
is 1000 millimeters
A liter is 1000 cc.
kilometer is 1000 meters.
Do you see a pattern?
All the values end with a.......
By the way we bought wood by weight in the old contry.I know! you still don't like the metric system.
At least we do not weight with stones a pebbles! Be safe...............................Guido:)
