Baler Belting

Im looking to replace the belting on my Massey Ferguson 450 round baler. It has the regular smooth sided belts on it now. Can anyone tell me if a rougher belt design will make a noticeable difference on this old of baler? Link below shows belt styles Im looking at.

You should go with the Diamond top belt. You will start the bales much easier. Also you will not have the belts slip off of the bale when starting it as much. Also how wide are your current belts? Many of these old Massey/Vermeer balers had the narrow four inch belts. If you are replacing the whole set then you can install wider belts by just changing the belt guide. The wider belts make baling much easier.

Right now I have the 4 inch belts. I have seen where some of the slightly newer Vermeers had a wider belt on the outside. Is this best or should I go with wide belts all the way across?

If you are looking for belting, try Hammond Equipmint, just google it, I think they are out of fawnsdale(or something like that) ALA. Good service, and they have the answers to any questions about belting. Belts for my Hesston 5530 were about $550, a coupla years ago, when the dealer wanted over $800, if I remember right.

I have a LeggBelt book at the shop and will try and look up your model today.
We put wider belts on a 430 JD years ago and you will have to widen the guides and there will be at least 3 sets of them.
While you have the belts off, it is a good time to recondition the guides with a welder and grinder.

Are you sure it was a JD 430 because they came from the factory with six 7" wide belts and I've never heard of putting wider ones on them? Maybe it was a JD 410 because the outside belts were replaced with wider ones.

at least put a 10" on each side, my 605 super f has all 10" belts, easier to start bales in finer material. From what I have been told , you want to stay with smooth belts in these balers.

Legg Belt book shows 8 each, 4" x 388" long. They are available in 2 ply smooth, 2 ply mini-rough top, 3 ply smooth, 3 ply mini-rough top, 3 ply rough-top, 3 ply Chevron and 3 ply diamond. The book says that 3 ply mini-rough top is the manufacters recomendation. You may also order 9 inch belts and replace two 4 inch belts. The cost is a little more than two 4 inch belts as they figure material used.
