Just went to look at a friends tractor, will start easy, he put conditioner in the fuel, new air filter, fuel filter, but it will not do anything other than idle and the exhaust is gray/black and almost sounds like steady rushing air out the stack. I can see no bleeds on the fuel pump, the fuel return to the tank is steady flow and filter fills up fast. Can work the throttle linkage and nothing happens. Any ideas would help me get him going.

Take the muffler off, it's probably plugged with soot and crap.

Most of the time, this time of the year, its a wax build up in the fuel filter. Remove the filter, get a new one, fill filter halfway up, with Diesel 911, rest of the way with fresh diesel, then prime to the injector pump, then crack the injectors, till you see fuel running out as it cranks.
Down low ont the rigt side of the dash is a small red knob for manual kill . Sounds like some one has this knob pulled out about half way. If not you have injector pump or front cover trouble. Sounds like maybe a gear stipped in the front cover but I am beting on something simple like the kill knob out.
Thanks for the replys. Like I posted, it starts easy, idles evenly, but grayish black smoke and the best I can discribe as a steady wooshing or air rushing out of the exhaust stack. New fuel filter, new air filter, no wax or restrictions in those. The shut off works as it should, and as it idles, you can work the throttle and nothing happens, and throttle linkage is working. Guess I will check the pump next. I have not taken the muffler and checked that, but its outside, pouring the rain today, so maybe in the next few days I can get a better look. I need it brought here, but can"t.

I agree with Adirondack case guy. If the muffler has a swooshing sound as you stated I'd try running engine with muffler removed.
