Charging Golf Cart Batteries

How often should I charge my Golf Cart Batteries, or how much should I discharge them before I charge them. It is a 09 EasyGo 2plus2 Use it around Farm a little every day, It has a batt gauge like a gas gauge, I have been charging it when it gets to 3/4 full, every 4 or 5 days. Should I charge it every time I use it? My neighbor waits till his gets below 1/2 till he charges it. He says dealer told him to wait that long, opinion's

Deeper the discharge to charge cycle. And the longer a lead acid battery sits partly discharged The shorter a lead acid batteries life is.
Of course over charging. Charging too fast or too slow also ruins lead acid batteries.

You should every now and then discharge it more. I have found that if you deep cycle a battery every now and then they last longer.

I had the habit of putting my cordless Dewalt battery in the charger after every use, no matter how little. My batteries where not lasting very well. I called DeWalt and they said that if you keep a battery topped off all of the time it loses storage life. Since then I run them down until they just about quit. They do seem to be lasting better. I know this is not as big as a battery as your gulf cart but the principle should be the same.

I have 4 carts at work, and one at home. ALL 4 have a gauge, and we run the ones at work to well below the 1/4 mark, to the point they are begining to slow down when moving before we charge them. I do the same thing at home. I repalced all 6 of my batts like 4 years ago, and the ones at work, with exception to 1 of the carts, have been in there for about 6 years now.

Your drill has either lithium or nicad cells. The golf cart uses lead acid.
Again, deep cycling shortens lead acid battery life.

The chargers have a build in brain box that will shut them off when fully charged. Recharge before they are completely flat. I think you don't want to get them below 1/4 charge. The guages that I've seen will tell you one thing when you are driving and another thing when they are setting. Under charging will do more harm to your batteries. Heat will kill batteries too..let them cool off before charging or charge at night. Check the water level often. If the cell is using water, sign of a bad battery. Buy a load tester and check each battery often and replace it. One bad battery seems to kill the other batteries. Depending on use, you may will be lucky to get 4-5 years.

Major companies that make those batteries (e.g. Trojan,Deka, Rolls, etc.) all say exactly what Buick-Deere already stated. The deeper the discharge before charging, the shorter the life.

They also all claim that true deep cycle batteries should be "equalized" at least once every 6 months. That is a process where they are overcharged. Any good deep-cycle charger should have the "equalize" function.

you should hurt them by charging at 3/4.

Important to keep water levels good.

ALso, if you store it very long, (winter) make sure they are fully charged 1st. we had some GCart batteries last 9 years.

Trojan T-105 golf-car batteries, or Deka equivalents are expected to last 10 years when well cared for. They greatly outlast AGM batteries in solar-electric battery bansk and cost half the price (but are going up fast).
