Does This Make Any Sense At All To You?

Lady down on a ranch 'bout 300 miles from here has a jet-black 2-year-old stud and two 2-year old fillys; all quarter horses. The stud stands 16 hands.

Her boss is on her case to get 'em off the ranch (horses eat a huge amount of feed, ya know).

Anyway, you know big hearted old Allan...................

Now I ask you, is feedin' 10 yead of saddle horses just about crazier than anything you've ever heard of? :>(

She offered to just give me the silly things and I told her that I'd "keep 'em for her".

Thing of it is, horses are like guitars, you can only operate one of 'em at a time...... :>(

I dunno Allan, the wife tells me you can't have just one because it'll get lonely.........so we have three!!
Makes about as much sense I think. Ours go through a small round bale (about 4'-5' in diameter) in about 2 weeks.

That is what the wife says about more tractors, but at least we don't have to feed them all the time. Tried to tell her that they were wearing dedicated implements, and she wanted to know how come they had to have 3 pt hitches.

Yeah,

Don't ya just hate being married to those smart ones at times? :>)

Oh well, been looking for a good stud horse for quite awhile now. Breeding fees around here are $800 at the cheapest.

Ah,claim it on temporairy insanity, you may snap out of it when all the hay is gone and its still winter.

LOL!

Well, at least mine have to work fer a livin'.

Besides, if diesel fuel gets anymore expensive, they'll be put on 3 shifts round the clock. :>)

Between horses and ponys, I am feeding 11 head right now. they are not all broke to ride. I have not actually been horse back for about 4 years now, dont seem to have the time. But for me, my daughters who are 4 and 6 enjoy the heck out of them. I take them out every chance I get to let them pet them and lead them around.

Wait a minute Allan...already too many horses and now you're getting a colt and two more fillies? That's not going to fix the problem you know.

I am down to 4 from a high of 13 a couple of years ago. My wife thinks they have to be in out of the weather every night so guess who gets to do the stalls when it is cold. I actually don"t mind it since it gives me something a little physical to do away from my desk every day. Also helps justify some of the toys. My favorite implement is my $500 New Idea #19 manure spreader, spent a couple of years loading it onto the pickup only to have unload it back off the truck. Hay and feed do take a chunk of change though.

As somebody else said, I would be watching that colt/filly combination. If you are complaining about 10 it could double in a few years.

I ask the same question everyday, why.... well there is the far fetched consideration that one of them may sell for a decent buck, only after keeping em feed, ridden, healthy ! No it makes no darned sense at all :) more so on christmas morning when cleaning stalls :)

Hopefully you have enough hay, weather here last summer made for some good quality hay, keeps em from getting thin, but that stack sure has a dent in it now.

Awful nice of you to do that for her regardless, tough spot to be in for her.

I think you're doing the right thing Allen, at least you can use them. Here in central Ky. old racehorses and what to do with them is getting a lot of attention. The care and Vet bills can really add up.

Why the belly achin??? The IH 1066 was to most fuel efficient tractor ever built. Just a simple as pourin' on the ground - how can it get in more simple and efficient than that?:^)

I took a free horse from a lady a few years ago thinking the worst I could be out is gas money to the sale barn. Turned out to be one one the better horses I've ever owned. He is a complete gentleman when the kids ride him, and man does he come to life when you want to move cows.

Ar least we won't be disappointed when it comes time to sell them, we know they aren't worth anything. I actually own one horse but I've got four.

Make sure you get some paperwork, just in case they don't work out.

The horses are either HERS or YOURS.
To what pioint can you give them back, and do you pay all the vet bills.

A good deed can kik you in the butt when you least expect it.

how are you feeding i round bale every 2 weeks? my 3 eat a 4x4 bale every 3 to 4 days i got 4 tractors wife has 3 horses even enough in my book i ended up with 2 tractors because of making hay for the horses plus we ride them some put over 200 miles on them last summer

No horses for me,several have been 'dropped' at night around here like they used to drop dogs and cats.Need to bring the horse slaughter business back.Hey the French gotta eat too

I wouldnt take a free horse on a bet, but a hay burner at a hundred a month and I feed them I'll take all day long.

I own and run and run a boarding stable.

The average horse will eat a 60 lb. bale every three days. Every one grains differently. Bu I have learned that the way to put a million dollars in the bank in the horse business is to start with three million. I also have found out there is no such thing as a free horse. Vet bill minimum of $150 plus $75 for the farm call. Farrier, minimum $45 every 6-8 weeks for a trim. If you shoe then $75. Worming every 2 months Ivermectin $5, Equmax $10, Pyrentel $5. The you have the incidentals like 1 pint Coppertox. $18
Show Sheen $13, and you figure if your going to keep them in top shape your going to spend about 3 hours a day with each horse in the exercise pen and arena, and turn out in the pasture and putting them back in, feeding and cleaning stalls. A couple of hours a month maintaining and repairing tack and harness ( have a 18.5 hand Percheron Thoroughbred horse that I drive. And That's just the regular everyday stuff. Forget about emergency calls and transportation, and they haven't even payed the rent for the space yet. $175 minimum in this area. So would someone please show me a free horse. I said that once and they said it would be a dead one. Then i reminded them that the used livestock dealer charged $125 to haul it off. Nope, still haven't ever seen a free horse. I love them and consider mine my best friends ( next to my wife ) She made me say that. lol. So yes I have taken in some homeless horses over the years and if I could AFFORD it there wouldn't be a neglected, abused or homeless domestic horse out there, but I can't take them all in and if I did I wouldn't have the time to care for them as they deserve. But never have I considered a homeless horse free. That,s like saying "HAY my wife just brought home a free kid" Ain't no such thing. LarryT

If it works for you, why not.

I saw an add in the local, free, two Jack Russells aged 10 and 9. mother and son. The add ran for weeks, apparently the womans husband died and she was moving into a flat. Thought their fate would be a needle so I just picked them up, very obedient and good friendly lickers. Will give me a little enjoyment, they don't talk back.

My Brother has pacers. he often says the best way to make a small fortune is to start with a large one. I see LarryT is of the same mind.

"Thing of it is, horses are like guitars, you can only operate one of 'em at a time"

HUH? You've never heard of teams, four horse and six horse hitches?

Give those red things a break and use a little nag horse power.

Hope you know I'm just joshing you.

Always amazes me how much $$$ folks can spend on a horse when I was a kid my Grand dad had a couple work horses he kept after he and my dad started using tractors. We worked the garden with them rode them some and can't ever remember any problems or all the other stuff people do.Way easier to keep in the Winter than cows and the only grain they got was a few oats when we worked them, both lived to be over 30 years old.

If you want them and can afford it, take 'em! I'm a big sucker for QH's so I'd probably do it myself bein' I was in your shoes.

Well, just so you realize that you won't be "keeping them for her". Once they come to your place, THEY'RE YOURS, for better or for worse. When it comes time to give them back, she'll have no place to keep them, no money to feed them, etc., etc.- and there's no way you can force someone to take a horse.

We've gone from 14 to 7, and one of those goes to my daughter's as soon as she gets a place. I want to get to 4, wifey says has to have 5. To go riding with kids and grandkids, loan to friends, etc.

We just got rid of our two horses.Took a year to find a good home for them and of course they were free.Sure do miss em most of the time, but was the right thing to do.Most people comment, cost too much huh!Well actually even though things got a little tight around here,as it did everywhere. That was not the problem.I found if you have proper pasture the yearly cost of two horses was around $1000.00 a year.I got a steal on hay=3.00 a bail, delivered and stacked in the barn.180 bails got me thru Nov-April.Farrier every 2-3 months 50.00(no shoes). Now granted I had very good keepers, very healthy, hay and water, maybey a little grain in the winter.Vet bills can really put a sting on the joy of horses. They had to go though, wife has health issues and I been working like crazy(two jobs),just couldnt do it anymore.
But what Ive seen of Allens character for quite a few years on here,if anybody can handle three more its him.Sounds like a couple of nice ponys.

Good Luck

Stan

That "two year old stud" thing is what I'd be most worried about if i took these in...that's a guarranteed fence destroyer when those fillies come in season!
