Really Big Marbles!

I could believe my eyes when I saw these huge rocks scathered around the country-side.

We have quite a few of those here in Maine; they're called "glacial erratics." After the last Ice Age, when the glaciers receded these big stones were left behind, on the surface.

When European settlers arrived in this area, some folks used to break sections off these to make foundations for their houses; in effect, they had their own private (and nearby!) quarries.

Thanks for sharing.

Maine Fordson:

My small corner of the world has many smaller marbles, aka "Kildeer Eggs", aka rocks! I have to admit they are fewer in numbers, but still a great nuisance especially when harvesting beans.

By the way, they all have their individual names!

There is no doubt they would make excellent foundation rocks!

Now there is some Big ones !! as Main Fordson pointed out many have been dropped off although not rounded like that, but mostly on hillsides and valleys I see that seems to be on top of a crest on a high point. Very interesting Pic thanks !

The erratics also occur in areas that had glacial lakes during the ice age. Icebergs would calve off the glaciers and float around the huge lakes. The rocks were inside the icebergs, and as they melted, they eventually dropped off the rocks, sometimes in unusual places. Finding erratics in high places suggests how deep the water must have been in the glacial lakes.

We have lots of them in my area. They are easy to identify because they are so rounded and often are very different rock than most of what is around here. Some are too big to move, but most of them in our cultivated area have been rolled to the sides of the fields.

The Ice Age(s) must have been interesting times!

Saw a doco on rocks ,last night, being in an area where they should not have been, analysed them and found they were 200 miles from home a result of shifting ice during the ice age.Aeons ago.

Bendee:

Let me in on what is a Doco? I recall seeing all of the Cockies, but do not recall a Doco!

If I recall correctly again, these rocks/dinosaur eggs were south of Bendigo!

There is an aviation memorial also near Bendigo!
Great Big Propellor mounted on this monument!

I CAN'T believe that these boulders were rounded off by glaciers. How many times around the world would they have to be rolled to round them off? How much would you round one off if you rolled it one thousand miles? How far did a glacier roll them, maybe a few hundred at most?

I think he meant he saw a documentary.

So you saw a Document (Doco) on the reason why the "Big Marbles" showed up where they did, here I thought you were talking about an animal of some description.

Being the Village Idiot does have it's advantages!

I recall a story Gramps told about a Leaverite/Dinosaur Egg, the size of a Volkswagon Bug.

In such cases when early farmers discover such erractica, it would become their stone pile.

It was also said that early farmers would build extreme fires encompassing the large boulder, then as the flames died down, they would pour cold water on it, hoping it would crack into smaller pieces.

If all else, they would use blasting material to remove such obstructions!
