I am not talking commercial but these catalog mail order companies. Questions are i was told that many of them has been bought out and is one large conglomerate? Some of the catalogs look the same just a different name/cover? Now some items we got did good some not so good, what about there quality? Any recomendations?

i have a little hardware store that does a seed rack and i"ve had better luck with things growing when i get my seed from them as compared to ordering it. i do have to get there early in the season or they get "sold out". My heirloom seeds i get from "seed savers".

I got mine from gurneys and the henry fields catalog does look the same, The only thing that didnt come up was a seedless watermelon, and this time I told them and they sent me new ones for free,

i have good luck with gurney, jung, fields, and schumways. there are a few others i order from too but cant remember the names off hand. i use the catalog s for things not normally available locally ie rhubarb, horseradish, gooseberrys, elderberry and a few fruit and nut trees. never had any problems. the usual garden seeds i get from the local big r stores and have had good luck with them also.

This is an old family owned co in central Texas that I have been buying from for 30 years. They have an online catalog, check it at: willhiteseed.com

Many formally independent seed companies try to appear to be that way now are actually owned/controlled by Monsanto.Heirloom Seed Company in Mansfield Missouri is an excellent independent seed company with many older and new varieties.

I might have to look into that a bit closer since they are about 100 miles due south of me and there is a place down there that also sells roofing metal cheap. Make one trip and do it all

I have had excellent luck with J W Jung Seed Company. I had a problem with some potatoe eyes last year, for the first time, they were very quick to give me a "replacement credit". I will use that this year. I have planted 2-3 year old seed from them also with great germination rate still. SHON

We buy almost all of our seed from Fedco seed in Maine. They will not stock any seed from any company that deals with Monsanto and they have many heirloom varieties, plus they are fairly honest in their description of their products. They will say 'this apple looks beautiful but it tastes like cardboard' for instance. I recommend them highly to anyone who likes the older varieties.

Harris seed is a good one. They don't make you jump through hoops or play coupon games to get a fair price.

Ratings, ownership, etc.

There is sort of a garden catalog watchdog site/group at the link below. Many of the old companies are owned by one company now but continue to publish independent catalogs to entice you to buy more, from them because of experience, etc.

My motto is to each their own. I don't have a problem with anyone planting open pollinated varieties, growing with chemical assistance or growing organically.

As for me I prefer to use hybrid varieties, chemical fertilizers because I no longer have easy access to natural ones, and I will use pesticides when I deem them to be necessary.

Rather than use insecticides on some crops I'd rather use a row cover or simply not grow that particular crop.

I do still like to support some of the companies of old that do a lot of varietal research and am willing to pay more for their seeds to support such. Burpee has given us excellent varieties for decades and I will continue to support them.

To a point I'm also willing to buy Roundup vs. generic glyphosate so that Monsanto will continue spending research dollars.
Ownership toward bottom of page.

Johnny"s selected seed is a great company excellent csustomer service and almost completley employee owned. Based out of Winslow Maine. It has been expanding a lot recently and has been great for the community. Their catalogs are a gardener"s handbook in themselves. I buy 90% of my seed for a 25 acre veggie farm from them.
