I installed an amp gauge on my tractor to replace the generator light that stays on after replacing the generator with a new alternator. the gauge has a + and - terminal. when the battery is hooked up sparks fly like its a dead short ! i used the battery terminal for the + and grounded the - side of the gauge to the tractor.is this wrong?? thanks for any advice.

You are passing all the current from/ to the battery through the gaue. If the curcuit is live when you hook it up , sparks will fly!

Your amp gauge goes in a series connection from the alt to the battery.

Follow the big wire from the alt to where ever it goes I E could go to the positive post on the starter or starter solenoid or to the pos post on the battery.

You need to split this wire and put your amp gauge in the middle. You can just unhook from the starter or solenoid or battery and hook the loose end to the + side and then make a new wire from the - side back to the stater, solenoid, or battery.

You will need probably a 60 amp meter to handle the current from an alternator.

Yes..you are wiring it wrong...Ammeter needs to be wired in series..
You might consider a voltmeter instead..

That's how you wire a voltmeter.
As previously stated. An ammeter is just spliced in series with the wire between the battery and the ignition switch. With the lead from the alternator or generator going onto the same terminal as the ignition switch. As the ammeter is connected to.

Wired wrong, your producing a dead short between the battery and ground. The ammeter must be wired between the battery and all charging / electrical loads.

Follow this link down the page to the wiring diagram. I will show you how to correctly wire an ammeter into your tractor electrical system.
Ammeter wiring.
