Personal property tax in Missouri ????

I was talking to a friend that lives around Kansas City, Mo. He was talking about how in Missouri you have to pay personal property tax on things you already own. He though it included cattle ,tractors, horses, etc. He lives in the city and has to pay it on all of his cars before he can get his license each year. How much is it on the old tractors like many of us have on this site???

It is only on things that require registration through the state here in KS. Items such as boats, jetskis, snowmobiles, vehicles and houses. They do not track tractors and I hope they never do.

I live in Missouri and tractors are assessed by size and age. Many people do not report them and some cannot count cows very well.

A few years ago I was driving my "B" Farmall in a parade and out assessor remarked that I had done a nice job restoring it I told him that I would appreciate the comment if it was from someone other than the assessor.

We have it here in NE too. We pay on all registered vehicles + equipment that is on a depreciation schedule. Cows are no longer taxed.

In Nebraska, they ding ya for everything under the sun except the air...........

And, pretty sure that they're working on that. :>(

There is no personal property tax in Illinois. It was done away with in about 1970. I remember how much my Dad hated it. As I recall, they even taxed your furniture!

How did NY state miss that one. Here's the list of taxes for a typical person here: federal,FICA,state, property (land value), school, 8% sales tax in our county, town tax , high fuel tax, tax on electricity and heating fuel, many cities and villages have taxes along with all the fees and other things that aren't named a tax. There's probalby a few more I've forgotten. It's about the only area we are still a leader in. Can anybody beat this list?

Kansas has that too, but farm equipment is exempt. Individuals pay property tax on cars, trailers, boats, and real property like homes and land. Businesses pay property taxes on all that and small office equipment like copy machines and even the desk and computer I'm sitting at. Couple that with sales tax, income tax and even a special tax on savings account and people are still screaming that we should pay more.

I had never heard of that until recently. Have a friend that owns a small pizza place in a little bitty town called Sparta, MI. He was telling me the village has enacted this personal property tax and he has to go thru and take a total inventory of every asset in his business. He called and asked about it and was told he needed to list every individual item in the building including inventory used to make the pizzas. This is just flat out stupid, there is no reason a person should be taxed on every bread stick pan and pizza cutter used in the business. I told him to send the form back empty, they have no legal right to come in his store and see the inventory.

CA has "unsecured personal property tax" in addition to real property tax

individuals no longer have to list their TV sets and furniture to pay tax on it but businesses still have to

returns are due during middle of tax season when every minute counts

We lived in Florida for six years, and at the time there was no personal property tax. (early '90's)
But gasoline was always about 15-20 cent a gallon more.
In a tourism state, the gas tax made up for the loss.
I thought it was fair, because if you were elderly, or didn't drive, you didn't pay.
Everyone who purchased gasoline paid.

I live in Iowa. Years ago my brother was given 2 small hunks of property in southern Missouri. When he passed away I had to go locate his property. I spoke to the county treasurer and told her I would like to keep the property and put beehives on them. She told me we would be taxed on every hive and if we put up a small storage building they wanted an inventory on anything we put in the building. We would be taxed on the building and the stuff in the building. I had never heard of this before.

Yes,the assessor DOES have the right to come in to his business to assess his personal property. They will give him the chance to comply on his own, they will come in and do it,or they will estimate. Our old assessor always estimated, our new one sends out the form and asks for voluntary compliance. It's based on what a business has for equipment on December 31st. An interesting asside to that,it applies to the township where the equipment is located on that day. If you're in the excavating business and you have a dozer or loader sitting in another township other than the one where your primary business residence is,the tax is due in the township where that piece is that day.
It doesn't apply to farm personal though. we're exempt.

You'd better think again on that one. Pretty sure all townships in Michigan have personal property tax on business equipment and fixtures.

Be very careful with statements like that. They are easy to make when it's not your business at risk. Personal property taxation is set up in the Michigan Constitution.

Regarding "legal right" the assessor may have the legal right to inspect the property if the owner fails to file a statement, and may bring the sheriff along to make the situation really simple for the owner.

The assessor may also have the legal authority to file an arbitrary assessment if the owner does not file one. That might be even worse than having the assessor and sheriff show up to do an inventory.

I don't think it's much. We had every intention of moving there 10 years ago. A realtor that we were dealing with had over 300 acres,100 or so head of cattle, newer brick ranch style home, new car, full line of equipment, pretty good sized dairy setup that he didn't use anymore and he said his taxes were less than $1000 a year.

No personal property tax or incom tax in Tennessee. However bussiness do pay property on fixtures and stock.

That $1000 is what he told you while trying to sell you the place?

I had a car salesman try to tell me that over the years a new car would only get shinery as the clear coat got smoother. He was trying to sell me something too.......

I'm filing 14 property tax returns next week for equipment spread across two states.

The soft drink distributor I used to work for filed nearly 60 property tax returns. Many counties wanted a separate return for each location - even within the same county. Every pop machine they owned had to be reported in the correct county, township and town.

No. That was on his own farm. He was an older fella. Had sold his dairy herd and he and his wife had both become realtors to supplement their income from their beef herd.
Missouri is a low tax state from everything that everybody told us on our many trips down there looking at farms. Same thing for Arkansas I guess.

Well in Missouri it is required to declare all that you own on Jan. 1st. auto, truck, tractors, boats, cattle, chickens, goats, beehives any livestock atv's, boatmotors. It is taxed on a depreciated scale. My 9n had a value of $200 assessed and paid a 6.5% tax on that value.
Less than a tank of gas.
2004 escape only had a tax of $185.
It's how we pay for the school districts, EMS, fire districts, road service in the county,so I don't feel to bad about it.
Some politician wants to do away with the 6% income tax and turn everything over to a goods and services tax that will have to jump the state sales tax to 15% to make up the difference. Every one in the state will be required to charge a tax on all transactions by your doctor, lawyer or any service that someone provide for you to pay at 15%.

WOW. Never thought anybody would say anything to make me kinda glad that I didn't move there, but that 15% tax just might be enough to make me happy to still be here in Michigan!

Got my Personal Property Tax statement last week (El Paso County, Colorado. We have to pay property taxes on everything that I list on my Schedual C on my Federal Taxes to the county. Thank goodness, I don't list my antique tractors/equipment. I'm waiting for the day when the assessor comes around and see them.

50 year old 3 bedroom home, market price is $124,000, property tax is $1798.

Low taxes are in the eye of the beholder.

We pay "real" property tax on land and fixed buildings, income tax, and 1 sales tax (in most areas), and thats it.

The sales tax is 13% in many places and doesn't apply to a lot of basic needs.
My overall income tax is about 25-30%,
The property tax is about 1000$ on 100,000$ of assessed value, or half that if its your primary residence. Cities tack more property tax on top of that but its all combined in one bill.

I have a Jubliee, 1953, so old no book value so there is not tax. Different story on my 2010 Mahindra 4110. MO means 'mo money please'.

My bad, I meant to say on business stuff. For my wife's shop, it isn't much, just a couple of tubs and tables in there.

You guys just made me not feel as bad about my taxes here in Ohio.

No wonder nobody keeps any parts inventory or upgrades their equipment with all this personal taxing going on !

You're right Doug - it was the 3% income tax that replaced the personal property tax. And it was supposed to be temporary, but was later made permanent. And now it's raised to 5%, I think. And temporary, if you wanna believe that. . .

I don't mind the Illinois flat rate income tax - especially when compared to the old personal property tax. (Did I just say I didn't mind a tax??!!)

We even paid a tax on the dog when the personal property tax was here.

A mining company had a mine that straddled the Missouri-Kansas border some years back, and since Kansas and Missouri assess on different days of the year, the mining company moved the big excavator (Multi-million$) before tax day every year and moved it back a couple days later.

One New Year's Day they forgot, and the township assessor saw the big machine sitting on his side of the line on his way to church. He went home and got his camera and called a couple witnesses.

I am assuming someone at the mine got fired for that. It was a big enough deal that the township and county had to roll back their tax rates for that year.

I have lived in MO, KS & OK. I find it cheaper to pay the personal property tax in MO than the annual vehicle license fees in KS & OK. Not that I like either, but the government is going to get you one way or the other!

Ohio. No chattle tax on farm items. Business does have that. Tax on your vehicals is the licence plate you buy for them, if not used on road you do not licence them. No chattle tax on household items. Have the realestate tax.

I'm only 25 miles south of missouri. In Arkansas I pay tax on my cattle tractors, farm equipment and anything that needs a license. All things that I use to make a living, as far as I know lawyers don't pay taxes on what they use to get their money(law degree)

I think it was exactly what he said, property tax! Personal property is billed differently.
That being said and done regardless, overall taxes in Missouri aren't high....
