I have a 1941 WC that cranks over slow. Usually will start but barely when really cold. Has new 1ga. batt. cables new batt.(6V) and freshly rebuilt starter. Could timing be advanced to far or is there other things to look at or for? Thanks for any advice. Jeff

As BC said, go with 0 or 00 cable. I would go with OO and be sure to have soldered connections. Be sure your posts are clean and that the ground cable attachment is clean. Be sure your battery is of adequate size.

Try cleaning up where it mounts to the engine, I think thats how it is grounded or positived as the case or allis my be!! Dan

Modern "rebuilders" may not be as good as the "old-timers". It is important to undercut the mica, was this done? There was a tool to do this, or it can be done by hand. The armature surface where the brushes contact, MUST have the mica insulators, dividers between the copper segments, cut below the level of the copper, about 1/32". A hacksaw blade segment, or possibly a dremel tool could be used.

If it kicks back or stalls before TDC, then the timing may be advanced. Usually happens when someone timed it by ear.

Another thing, make sure your grounds are SHINY. I put a new 6v battery, new 0 gauge cables, and new starter switch on my M, and it still turned over slower than a snail. I finally took a small angle head grinder with a 36 grit pad to all the ground connections (battery to chassis, starter hookup, ect) and it spun right over like it should when everything was hooked back up.

You do not undercut the mica on starters.Sharp edges of the commutator bars will smear the brush material and pack the grooves with copper.

Your WC is not going to turn over like an import car with a gear reduction starter.Avanced timing will not make an engine turn slower. The type of oil you have in it can make a difference.Holding the clutch down while cranking can help crank speed.
