decal removal

Hi all, making progress on my massey 135.
I am getting ready to paint the hood but am not having much luck getting the old decals off.
1. Can any of you share methods that have worked for you. I haven't tried yet but was thinking of using a heat gun next.

2. I cant find silver mist for the grill but tried a metallic rustoleum. It looks good but seems to rub off easily. What rattle cans paint have you found that matches the silver mist pretty well?

Thanks for all your advice.

If you can take off or open the hood, try the heatgun on the back side first. If there is any body filler there, it'll probable be gone also.

Good luck.

Dave

One thing that works for me if I need silver color is alumimum paint followed by clear coat. I don't know how close that is to silver mist . Just thinking off the top of my head silver mist might have a little more gray tint than aluminum. The clear does darken it just a bit.

For the decals, heat and patience are your two best friends.Jim

What have you done to get the hood ready for paint? Guess you didn't sandblast it? Didn't prime it? didn't sand it?
Do you have an air driven sander? I'd say go over the entire hood with a 5 1/2 inch DA sander with 220 paper and then prime and fill, and prime and paint.

Years ago I used to work in a boat factory, and sometimes folks would buy used boats made by us, and then bring them to us for updates, cleaning up, rehabing so to speak. The stickers, tape, whatever that were used for licenses and boat registration, you've seen them...the numbers on the hulls? That tape or whatever generally is there for years or decades, but put a heat lamp on it for few minutes and you would be surprised at how soft and pliable that stuff gets. Like taking a bandaid off. The gals that used to do the cleanup, touchup, and stuff? They were masters. Then use like mineral spirits to get the remaining glue off. When comes to glue, I think acetone and stuff like that is useless.

Good luck. Whats a heat lamp bulb cost anyway? You can use it again some other time.

Go to IH dealer and get some silver argent. Comes in quarts and spray cans, lays down good and smooth and dont need a top coat on it. Butch

Thanks to all of you.
So far I haven't done anything on the hood. I straighened the grill and welded or riveted any loose places and painted it. The nose cone got a coat of paint but will have to be relaced at some point cause it is bent up extremely bad. The bottom plate below the grill is also too bad to look good. The grill turned out good enough for me. The hood is indecent shape other than one place where a spot weld came loose and the previous owner took a stickwelder to it. I will have to do alot of work to make it look good so not sure if I will do that or replace it. For the winter, I'm just trying to make it more presentable than it is now. LOL just the naked gas tank and radiator now. I had a lawn mower gas tank bungie corded next to the battery for the first snow removal. Sure it looked very hick but I got my snow cleared so I was happy!
For the second round I had the original tank back on with a coat of black enamel and a new sparkling sediment bowl. Was up town then LOL

Have a great week and God Bless

Good advice heat gun is good idea Not sure what about the like mineral spirits is . Wouldn't just plain mineral spirits work??? I am working on an older co-op hood now wanting co-op decals off paint then put cockshutt decals on . Thanks for the info.

I'll give you a tip on taking decals off of flat surfaces. Forget the heat gun. That is to much work and time consuming. Take a single edge razor blade scraper. Put in a new blade. Get a sheet of 320 grit sandpaper and lay it on a flat surface. Now drag the scraper across it pulling it towards your body as if you were sharpening it. Always remember which side of the scraper is up and always have it in the UP position. Now you have the tool to lay on a painted surface and gently push on the decal. If you remove the decal and it leaves a little glue/adhesive, use acetone, mineral spirts, or laquer thinner to remove it.. I have remove many this way...JB

The word "like" is being used when talking, by teen-agers, and is infuriating to us older types! Gee, don't the teachers try to stop it?
Ohh, i forgot--teachers aren't allowed to say anything to their students, that might be misconstrued as bossiness, or manipulating their minds!
Oh, isn't that why we send them to school?
As for decal removal--if they haven't been covered by a clear-coat, just heat them with a hair dryer, and they will peel off handily. This from a retired auto body man.

Actually, I said "like mineral spirits" because I meant "like mineral spirits". I think that mineral spirits will remove the glue, but not sure. I'm pretty sure that acetone, which we used widely when building fiber glass boats will not, although there is a great many things that acetone will disolve, I don't think glue is one of them. We never kept mineral spirits around in the boat factory, but we did have something, an oil that I do not know how to spell, but was spelled to sound like "talley oil" which also cleaned, glues I think, but don't recall. However, since I didn't know how to spell it and can't find it using Google to ask me "Did you mean...?", I simply said "like mineral spirits".

So...like hey dude, know what I mean now for sure, for sure? Would like be rad if you like did dude.
