If I breed my black angus cows with hereford bulls will I get black white faced calves or do I need black bulls on hereford cows to get this color combo

Red is recessive to black and the white face is dominant. Most people use black bulls on Hereford cows but I think anyway you breed "em they"ll be baldies.
I bred Herford cows to Red Angus bulls and got red baldies and a few red brockle faced calves. I run mainly Red Angus cows now and I"m going to use a polled herford bull on them next year.

Yes you will get black baldies with a herferd bull. I bred mine that way last yr. The best looking and best mannered calves I have ever had/ You will not regret doing so. Those Angus are way to wild.

Yep, black baldies. The white face only comes from the white faced herford. Here are 3 black baldies, a holstien, a herford, and a angus.

I guess with as much cross breeding thats going on, its hard to tell sometimes what is in a cow. I guess I"m curious what the advantage of a red angus is over a black angus, especially like you just spoke of to produce baldies, just personal preference or other reasons?

I"ve had most of my cows crossed too. They are simmental cows bred to angus bull. Make nice calves, they are black/white.

I suppose it depends a lot on your market, but around here, a white face on a calf will cost you money in the feedlot market. Buyers want solid black regardless of genetics behind it. It seems like black baldies are usually from a guy who wants a herd of herefords for their calm, but breeds to an angus bull for better calf prices, not the other way around.

bob,

My registered black Angus bull got into my neighbor's mixed Hereford herd about 5 years ago. My neighbor ended up with three or four calves that had characteristic Hereford patterns on them but they were black and white instead of red and white. No baldies at all.

By the way, he later sold his Hereford bull and starting using one of the black and white bulls that were produced by my bull, and now he has a bunch of cows with Hereford patterned coats, but black and white instead of red and white. Not a single black baldy.

I'm no longer sure just what the combination is to produce black baldies.

We bred our Angus cows to Hereford bulls for years and always got black baldies. We never had any problems with the birthing but we always bought a Hereford bull with genetics for low birth weight. The buyers here pay top dollar for them.

Down here in Texas most people that want black baldies breed Hereford bull to Black Angus cows. But it will produce a BB calve the opposite way. Also some calves will be spotted on face they are called motley faced.

4010, I run both reds and blacks. The reds seem a little more docile but are not as aggressive mothers. the reds are real easy keepers.

Black color and white face are both dominant genes.
If you breed a angus (that has no red genes) to a hereford (either way) you will get a white face black calf.

Breeding this calf is where you will run into color problems.
If you breed this calf to a hereford you will get 50% white face black calves and 50% white face red calves.
OR...If you breed this calf back to a angus you will lose the white face 50% of the time.

The black color is only guaranteed if the bull is homozygous black. If it's heterozygous, the calf could be any color.

like most folks say,ive bred both ways.funny to hear folks talking about angus being mean, ive been run over 10 times more often by a hereford myself.Tried to catch a hereford bull last summer for a neighbor that flat ran over two horses.he was so mean you couldnt feed ,he would hit your truck. Finally darted him and dragged him in trailer with a front loader.Ive also had hereford cattle myself that were so wild that if you put them in a hundred acre feild they would go through the fence at the back if you stopped at the gate in front!Point is all of them will fight you sometimes.Theres is a huge difference though in one that will fight you,and one thats just plain wild or mean.Lots of old bulls and even cows will fight you if you mess with them,,rarely will you find one thats plain old mean, those will go through a corral fence just for the pleasure of running you down! The hardest cattle ive ever had to load bar none has been straight limosine.Day in and day out, money wise, health wise, easy to keep and sell, baldys are the way to go around here.Long lop eared cattle are the ones to stay away from, good cattle most of the time,be hard to beat a santa getrudis for a range cow that you put in a pasture and forget, but just wont bring the money another one will.I suspect a lot of times folks starting out think they are buying angus, when they really have a little brahma in them.

(quoted from post at 09:54:15 02/19/11) The black color is only guaranteed if the bull is homozygous black. If it's heterozygous, the calf could be any color.

By any color I hope you meant black or red body color with white or mottled face.
