discing hay field

I have two fields around ten acres that get cut for hay. Would it benefit them to take my disc and turn the blades straight and run over them to aireate the ground? When would be the best time of year to do this?
Thanks, Barry

I do not see that as areating the ground - just messing with your roots and opening up space for weeds to take hold. I like to take the hay rake and run it over the ground in early spring - seems like it invigorates the growth.

I fear if you put the disc gangs in neutral and work your field all wou would do is compact your soil, the opposite of what you want.

I go to school for crops and with a disc you woudnt be areating it much just compacting you need to get an areator or even in old rotory hoe would puncture the ground a bit to areate it

the best time would be to do it in real early spring. i have done this before then overseeded after and it works very very well

Find somebody in your area that has an aerway & have them run over it with the tines straight or at the first angle position that will help it out alot.

actually it does do some good, not much on aereating but it stimulates new growth.this time of year would be good, also anytime before weeds set seed will help control them .

hi as for discing your fields it does help i have done it several times ,overthe years started around 1988 ,after discing reseed or fertilize, and add pellet lime , i have a spreader and do it my self ,you will see a difference in your hay production defentely.i quit farming and sold out but im getting back into it again hay sales that is i used to sell all my hay and thats how i kept it producing , since ive quit my nieghbor has did my hay and added nothing , no discing either and hay production has dropped in half from 240 round bales to half or less on the same acerage. it does work! im going to start again soon. hope this info helps you out
