Allis Chalmers experimental fuel cell tractor video.

Allis-Chalmers had a plant and foundry at
LaCrosse, Wisconsin, near me. (Formerly LaCrosse
Plow Works, and home of the "Happy Farmer" tractor) They had test fields here. I saw that tractor work, when in High School!

Seems to be moving awfully slow. Wonder what would be with today's technology. Probably more power in that sized package. Tractor might be far better application than automotive. More uniform speeds, loads.

As an AC owner, I must ask where is AC today? Huh? I found some literature on that tractor, they called it the "Volt" and it got 40 yards on a full charge and cost 6 times as much as a B or C. OK, just funning there.

On a serious note, thanks much for that video. That's very interesting. I have no idea what prompted them to create that, but something did. I don't know whether or not they had them on straight, but they had their thinking hats on when they tried that. Again, thanks much for that video from the archives. I wish that my father were alive to share it with.

Allis Chalmers was a big corp with many divisions. A more nerdy division (named in the allis promo video) came up with the concept, researched it, and found another division that would be a good place to experiment with practical application of the idea.
It was not in vain. Fuel cells are thriving in the space program. they just haven't had the break through to fit on a metaphorical microchip yet. the components are also expensive compared to fossil fuels (but they are a better power source in space where atmospheric and other resources don't exist). As time goes on, someone will develop a fuel cell that fits in your hand and makes enough energy to move a ton 10 miles at 50 mph, and so on.
Search youtube for the latest fuel cell tractor, New Holland/Fiat has one currently.
