What Do You Think About This Trailer? (PICS)

A friend of mine who does a lot of scrapping purchased this trailer at an auction yesterday. He is just going to haul it in for the metal value. I was talking with him last night about it and he says that its a very well built trailer. All metal, single axle with duals. It is 8 ft 6 in. wide and 18ft 7 in. long without the dovetail. He said that the tires have a lot of life in them yet. He is asking scrap price for it, $850.

If I don't buy it from him he is going to haul it into the iron pile TOMORROW! So I need to make a decision by tonight.

What do you all think?

I think it would be a great trailer for hauling my tractors around on. It looks well built and sturdy.

Thanks for your input!

I would say if you can use it , it"s a buy.
but if you don"t have any use for it I can
find faults & many things you can change..
It is heavey unit from an older trk...

It looks like a former military trailer with the lunette that's used with a pintle. I see the folding landing leg with the wheel. It probably has a metal tag on it that gives the model number and the military stock number. We probably tested one like it where I worked. We tested the M1A1 & M60 Tanks too. Hal

How much bother and how much money to get a title so you CAN haul your tractor on it?
I bought a stock trailer without a title one time. It was over a certain weight,so it was a nightmare. Had to have a cop come out and inspect it along with calling in the VIN after I had already given it to them at the Secretary of States Office when I applied for the paper work. Then I got a call to take it to another location to have it inspected again because the cop who did it here in my yard didn't fill out the back side of the sheet. And on and on and on.....

$850 for scrap sounds high.. how much does it weigh?? I would suspect it would bring $500 at best for scrap.

That single axle is way too far back from center, so unless you plan on pulling it behind a 1 1/2 or 2 ton truck, you will be placing way too much weight on the hitch of your truck. Also, that single axle will result in a whole bunch of bouncing and jerking at highway speeds and it will be a real challenge to keep it on the road. Another thing, all trailers ARE required to have brakes, and I doubt very much if that one does. Unless you plan to use that trailer strictly for on the farm, and off road, it would be better to let it go to scrap.

Rustyfarmall IS CORRECT. >AS well as rrlund. Balance is everything.Trying to title it is still another matter. Brake system another, and so on . We built two of em (still have one) use to haul small dozer, Bobcat . Dont haul em any more. . Equipment Trailer over 1,000lb,for Hwy use mandates D.O.T.certification here in WIsc.Unless your good at solving obstacles. I would only use it around the property. My personal take would be to let it go to china . JMHO. REGARDS LOU.

looks like a old school bus frame somebody put a deck on...if it is you could hook up one of those electric over hydraulic master cylinders fairly easy...they aint cheap tho...last one i priced was over $500.
check with your local law to find out how to title it...here in Tx its fairly easy...deputy inspects trailer for vin and if there isnt one they assign a number.
i agree there aint $800 worth of iron there unless that deck is 1/2" plate.

Looks to me that it should be hauled behind a 6 wheel dump truck.I wouldn't put that behind a pickup for the life of me.If you don't have one let it go to the far east and save your money. It seems like you like to preserve old iron but you also have to pick your battles carefully.

If you cut it down to length that fits a tractor, its balance will improve dramatically. It will need brakes that operate. Selling the cutoff parts will offset some cost. Jim

Definatly NOT for any truck you have indicated you have avaible, think tandem axle dump truck to pull. And then you could never get a balanced load on it.

Looks like it needs a jack, lights and wired, you need a bull dog hitch on your truck, thats around $200.00 just to untrack it, then your left with an unbalanced, hard pulling homemade trailer. I would help him haul it to the scrap yard.

Looks to me like it was used to haul a backhoe behind a dump truck. A hoe with a loader on front would probably balance out about right for that thing.
