John Deere 5020 will not idle

Looking at a jd5020(1969). It will start and run with a shot of ether(ya-I know-bad), once running it sounds great. When you try to idle it down, at about 1200 rpms she starts to die and will not recover. Had it running for about 30 min. Shut it down, then it would not even think about firing w/o ether. We did pull one line and seemed to have good fuel. I cranked it over w/o ether for 5-7 seconds-nothing, then a shot of ether brings her to life, small puff of black smoke out the stack-then clean. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!!!

I would pull the injectors and do a compression test.
have the injectors pop tested as well.

Starting these old boats on a wiff of ether wont harm them

Pull the top cover off the injection pump. If you see what looks like coffee grounds, the pump needs rebuilt. On a horizontal mounted pump like your 5020 that is usually where the bits of plastic winds up.Its probably not letting the metering valve go closed and keeping it from opening when you crank it.

If it is lack of compression there will be smoke at cranking. If you have no smoke while cranking most likely you are not getting enough pressure out of the injection pump to open the injectors.

Injection pump. Either the head is worn or the delivery valve stop screw is loose and stop is leaking. Reason you get fuel with line off at injection nozzle is it doesn't have to build much pressure when open to atmosphere.

Hey-thanks to all of you for the input. Could there be any engine damage caused by this condition? My concern is that the current owner states he has had to use ether for the last 2 years anytime he uses the tractor. He figures he has put about 150 hours on it in this condition-using ether everytime he starts it-hot or cold. Thanks again for all your input!
