Haybine question.

I saw a NH haybine for sale at a upcoming auction today, something I have never seen before. Instead of a reel in front of the cutter bar, this one appeared to have what looked like rake teeth on a reel or what ever it was. I have never seen one like this anywere, anyone have any info about it, I cant remember the model #, I think it was a 1465 or something like that. And a center pivot tounge. J

Not sure but think they were 495 or 1495. Excellent mower for picking up downed hay. They had rake teeth on the reel. They made a normal side pull version too. Center pivot was hydraulic drive.

At Macfaddens yard. Were pretty high in elevation here so we dont have many flooding problems. I did hear on the news that Lost Valley was gonna have some flooding problems thought. No I dident go to collar city. Was it a mower or tractor? J

Probably either a 495 (side pull) or 1495 I think was a newer version. 499 and 1499 I think was the center pivot type. Roll-A-Reel is what the thing is called. On MoCo's that have a cutterbar wider than the conditioner something has to pull the crop into the rollers. Most others used augers. NH used this setup. It works...

Ya barely, every time the snow plow guy came he would rip up the extension cords and phone wire running across the driveway, from his mothers house, going to his barn, so the guy that lives in the barn would be out there digging around in the snow to repair them..lol Glad Im not in there shoes!

it is coming up in april...newer 800 hr. cabbed massey about 90 horse...sometimes stuff goes cheap there...

macfaddens looks like it'll be a good one...you in the market for a haybine?

Yes it must have been a 1495, pretty neat, I had forgot my camarea or I would have posted a pic. I never seen one like that around here, only like my 489 reel. I wonder how it wears,? maybe like a hay rake I guess. Thanks JayinNY

No,,I just dumped $600 some odd dollars into the gear box on my NH489. I just never seen a mower like the one I posted about. Have you? Not the reel like you and I have but rake teeth or what have you. I did see a nice Deutz Fahr rotary rake, but I just bought a NH 56 last summer, so I will see what the DF sells for. They did have a nice, clean CAT 301.6 mini excavator, I looked at it but, I walked away, I need one like I need a hole in the haed! lol, I do love them little CAT minies though.. Had to get a straight drawbar for my Ford, so I went out there today. You and Your dad going to Macfaddens? J

can't beat macfaddens for finding any part you could possibly need...i like the winter and early spring auction when all of the brush is dead and you can take a nice stroll through the tractor graveyard and see everything...

can't beat those mini excavators either...we were thinking about ditching the backhoe and going with a skid steer and mini excavator...but that goes low in the "want" category...too many other needs...

never seen a mower like that either...the gearboxes really seem to go ont he 489...i think barry was going through 1 a year when he was running the 2 489...we run a 479 and a 488 which don't have the floating head but seem to avoid gearbox issues...

never felt the need for a rotary rake...like our 258 and really liked it since we made a double hitch and put an old international behind it...what is the advantage...speed or does it speed up drying time?

if you are up at hand's anytime soon there are 2 advertisements for auctions in the near future there was a pile sitting in the doorway...1 is the same day as macfaddens the other is a couple weeks later...i think both are in the ft. plain area...might be some rotary rakes there...

we'll definitely be at macfaddens...nice and early...try to catch some deals offthe wagon...we are not in "need" of any equip for once...never know though...sometimes a deal comes you can't pass up or you see something you never thought of or thought you'd need...

one of the best buys i ever had at macfaddens was on one of those 3 pt. hitch pallet forks...use 'em all summer for moving stuff around...never would have thought of them until we were walking the lot and said "hey...we could use those"

probably see you there.

Ya know, I really dont know what to think of the rotary rakes, as I have never used one, I do know they seem to pick up everything and leave nothing on the field. Seemed like I was always looseing teeth on my NI rubber mount teeth rake. The NH 56 seemes better as far as looseing/breaking teeth. I asked my FIL about rotary rakes a few years ago, and he claimed they were no good. Well guess who bought a new one from J. Millers last year???? Now its the greatest thing since sliced bread Im told. They may handle the hay a little more gentley, and I did read up on them in a Forage magazine, Which had good info for them, but like you said, my 56 and New Idea work good enought . Did you make it to the farm show in Syracuse?

I tried rotarys two different times. they do a good job of standing the hay up so that there is more air in the windrow but they don't turn tight and with my odd shaped fields I have multiple centers so I have to make a lot of tight turns.

Dunno how it wears. I know there is one in this area... and I've never seen a Haybine move as fast as this one does... so I know it works. These guys do maintain it well tho.
I believe Allan has one of the 495's if he's around... he can tell ya all about them.
Don't think there's any real particular problems with them beyond what other machines have.

Odd, I found a rotary much better on the odd shaped fields, I think you can turn tighter in both directions, plus (at least on mine) you can quickly raise the rake to walk over windrows. I much prefer the rotary over the side delivery.
