i been reading about this diamactheous [sp?] earth...sposed to be good for humans and animals...my cats got more n their fair share of fleas this year and the pour on's either burn them or flat dont work...i useta treat the yard every spring with dursban...thank you tree huggers...may the fleas from all my cats infest your nether regions.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that dimetaceous earth works to control fleas. What products have you used that "burn" the cats? I would recommend getting Frontline from local feed store or Petsmart, it is over-the-counter. Treat all dogs and cats once a month. It will take 6-8 weeks of using a product like Frontline to break the flea cycle and decrease the population to few. Use Frontline at minimum spring through fall.

i've tried Frontline,Advantage,Spot on...not sure if its a burn but they sure act uncomfortable till they find a dirt pile to rub it off in...looks like next step is shave em....thanx

The ingredients in Frontline and Advantage will absorb into the skin very quickly, most within 2-4 hours. Apply it up on the neck right behind the ears so they can't lick it off. Cats skin is very sensitive so what you are probably noticing is that they are feeling the product absorb through the skin. It will not burn or cause skin reaction though.

Animals rub in dust to allow the grit to abrade the waxy coating on insects exoskelleton. THis causes the Flees (or other insects) to litterally dry up and die. De is harmless as a dusting powder. Go for it. Jim

I am sorry to inform you but fleas don't die that way. Fleas are obligate parasites that means they live on the host all the time. Only flea eggs, flea larvae, and flea pupa are in the environment. Your approach won't work.

The animal is dusted and rubbed in with the earth. This action is direct on the flea. It is also important to kill eggs and Larva on surfaces and rugs. It is a doable task, but not easy. I would use steam cleaning on the carpet, and appropriate short lived chemistry on the infested areas. Jim.

I"m telling you it won"t be effective. Fleas have a very hard exoskeleton that is very resistant. You have to use a neonicotinoid chemical to kill them.

she uses it on her pets and seems to be happy with results...i bought a bag of food grade DE and dusted about 3/4 of my cats when i got home...theyre all outside cats except 2 that have inside cold nite privleges...all i treated are resting comfortably now...havent seen one scratching since about 2 hours after application...i got a new weapon that works.
btw...these are sand fleas and tough as nails...gonna dust the floors tommorrow even tho i fogged other day.

Food grade DE (not swimming pool DE) will get rid of fleas. BUT
you have to keep applying it everyday for 6 weeks. It only gets
rid of the fleas. The eggs are left behind and will hatch a new crop
of fleas which will lay more eggs. The trick is to keep killing fleas
and as the flea population decreases so will the egg infestation.
Eventually there will be no eggs and no fleas to lay eggs.

One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per quart of drinking water
also works wonders. It raises the acid levels in the blood and
the fleas don't like it and die of starvation. Have to keep it in their
drinking water and don't use white vinegar. Use apple cider vinegar.
Results will be seen in about a week but keep it up anyway.
