8 more horses diagnoised with rabies in my area of North Central Texas. Local authorities speculating it came from ferrel hogs. Lot of effort has gone into controlling them with out success. The good Lord may be taking over. If my memory serves me correctly that is what happened to "Old Yeller" after he got in a fight with them hogs.

Close, yellar got rabies from a wolf. But ive seen on the TV what your talking about with them hogs. Why cant you guys shoot and burn/bury the hogs?

Pat, Where are you in N. Cen. Tex.??????
I am S. Cen. Tex.!!! In between Lampasas and Georgetown. 5 miles S.of Briggs. Just curious if this is anywhere near Me!

Disease is density dependent. Too many hogs and they will spread it among themselves just like fire burning through brush. Good idea to get all the farm animals nnalert.

Yes, and now that they may be rabid no one will be out there shooting them.
Do the horses contract rabies from eating palnts that the hogs have drooled, peed or shat on?

We've got them too here. When one sow will have 12-16 piglets per litter they produce more pigs faster than you can kill out. They're out of control here too. What happens to the horses?

Do they not vaccinate for rabies down there? My wife makes sure all our horses are up on rabies and a bunch of other stuff. Even in this economy, a rabies nnalert is cheap insurance and better than a dead horse.

Lotsa people have horses that probably shouldn't. I think they just don't relize a horse can get rabies too. We get the rabies shots for ours. It's not expensive at all.

Accurate observations have been stated here regarding both horses and hogs. Main reason Texas has an over population of horses is as a result of laws banning slaughter. Some strong contrubutions to wild hog population. #1 Greed, land owners who charge hunters to kill them without consideration of the big picture. It is not uncommon for trappers to collect bounty on one farm then smuggle the larger ones to a hunting resort where "REAL MEN"pay to shoot them. #2 Outright cantankerusness and obstinateness when it comes to joining forces for a greater good. There are areas where sheep ranchers tax themselves to fianance coyote eradication efforts which are quite effective. I spect if some fool started advertising guaranteed kill fantisiy hunts for coyote and wild dogs on his land,he would incounter an angery mob. In spite of it all,I remain optamistic that sensability will return soon and the problem(s)will be solved.

Pat, I keep reading your posts trying to figure out where you are?? I am just south of Weatherford, TX, in Parker county, about 8 miles south of I-20. We have lots of horses here. Where are you as to town, county, etc?? Tom

We're up to our necks in ferrel hogs over here in East Texas as well. That's the first I've heard of hogs transmitting rabies to a horse though. It will be interesting to hear if this is confirmed and I'm sure it will add fuel to helping control these dang things!

I've seen feral hogs trying to suck milk from a cow and I've seen a large boar hovering around a cow giving birth. We didn't give him time to see what was to develop but I have a feeling during these dry conditions, I wouldn't put it past a wild hog to do anything for food.

Discovery Channel is advertising a new program "Hogs Gone Wild" about feral hogs. The previews seem to indicate they will catch them by hand and, I'm thing, probably release them. That's not a good idea.
