JD450C Dozer Starting Problem

I went to start the dozer after sitting in the barn for over two years. After connecting batteries, tried to start, but would not fire eventhough the engine would turn over normally. After several more time, I infected a small amount of starting fluid into intake and attempted once more. It came to life for a second or two but soon died. I did notice that the sound of the engine did not some normal, had a tinnish sound comeing from the engine?? I then rechecked to engine oil and noticed nothing unusual - thought I might have a blown head gasket, but no water in oil. A neighbor though that the diesel may have water condensate which might cause this noise?? I checked the fuel filter and confirmed that fuel was being delivered to the injector pump from the primary pump by loosening the fitting on the input line to injector pump and then activating the priming lever on right side of engine. What should I attempt next?? Thanks for your input.

Ether makes them rattle louder than fuel, there is no lubrication qualities in ether so the more ether you use the more the cylinder walls get washed off and dry. Get a mist bottle of fuel and add some engine oil to it, then squirt ether and fuel/oil mix at the same time into the breather..keep spinning 'er over and keep squirting untill she fires, then let off on the ether gradually..you need to get the cylinders hot and then it will start to 'diesel' and run. If you have good batteries keep 'er spinning as you squirt, once it hits it will help the starter and the more hits the easier the starter spins it until it starts to hit more and more..

Remove the timing window on the injection pump Turn the engine over and see if the timing mark shows up in the window. The pump might have seized up from setting that long.Would almost bet the injection pump needs attention.

I"d try bleeding the injctors. they may have leaked down after two years. Before doing that, however, I"d drain the filter canisters and replace the filter(s), rebleed freom tank to pump and then to the injectors. Charge the battery before you try bleeding the injectors.

My brother bought a 1010 diesel that had been through 2 other owners who couldn't get it started. They even went so far as to have the valves ground in it and it still wouldn't start. I went farther in to it and the rings were set up. Had to take a small punch and chip them out of the grooves. I put new rings in it and it started right up.

I could be wrong here, but I think the 350 and 450 models can not have ANY either as it breaks the top ring, and then they will not start without either. It was on this site or the JD, or dozer section within the last two years. My son has a 350, and I showed him the article about not using either in those models.

I kind of recal if they have a turbo, they probably have the better rings though.
