OT...Hauling

Im sure this question has come up many times but what is the going rate for hauling? Especially when diesel is nearing $5.00 per gallon here in western NY. I have a 2006 F-350 and a 30' gooseneck. I do hauling on the side not for a living as I am a welder. Per mile or per loaded mile? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use the rule of 3's. My fuel cost loaded makes a third of the bill, another third for the truck, and a final third for my time. Then times that times 2 to cover the return. I end up making a little extra on the backhaul fuel but that covers my time strapping the load down, hooking the trailer, etc.

For me, that translates into 1.50 a mile each way at 5 dollar fuel and 10 mpg or 3 bucks per loaded mile. Fuel here is around 4 so Im bidding at 2.40 per loaded mile with a 75.00 minimum, or one hour on my hourly rate.

A friend of mine had a corn planter hauled from indianapolis to near dayton ohio. They charged him $4.00 a mile.

I think you have a pretty good formula there. Pretty darn close to the rates I got on the last two hauls I did. I didn't really care if I even made those hauls, but a friend needed a favor and was willing to make it worth my time.
