Mike, our 584 at the farm does the same thing, any impurities in the fluid and the hydraulics get slow and the steering goes. Did he have it hooked up on a hydraulic line to run something? I borrowed a neighbours tilt wagon one day and then went to the dealer for another filter, the fluid in some rams may be contamimated and that's all it took to clog my filter. My neighbour's old Allis didn't have a filtering system and so everything he owned that was hydraulic was poison to my tractor. I avoid hooking up my hydraulics to anyone else's machinery unless I know it is clean and filtered. Also A parts guy gave me the wrong screeen that goes with that particular filter and that created a heck of a problem. It took two trips to the dealer to discover what was wrong. We then decided it was time to change all of the fluid. If your buddy's tractor hasn't had a fluid change for a lot of hours...who knows. If your friend hasn't replaced the screen , get a new screen and filter together and I guess that will solve the problem. he should keep an extra filter around too..just in case... Good Luck Mike...Mike
