John, the grass board clears a 6 inch or so path so when the mower comes around on the next pass, the inside "foot" of the sickle has a place to ride in and does not ball up with cut grass. I call this "staying in the groove." If you get out of the groove you have a good chance of plugging up the mower. Johnny in E.Tx
