I have a 686 with the D-312 in it and it works great - fantastic tractor. I think the main difference is the engine used their were a number (D-312, D-310, D-29?, + others)

The D-312 is a smaller version of the D-414 and shares a number of items. My 686 turns up to 1800 RPM vs 2400 on my dad's 966 with the D-414. One word of caution is that you need to keep the level of DC-4 (anti rust additive) in the coolant as this engine is a wet sleve design. This is true of all IH wet sleve engines (two I know of are the D-312 & D-414)

Once I thought of turning up the RPM's to 2400 in hopes of gaining 10-15hp but discovered that the trans is a little dated. It looks a lot like an M transmission and uses the same axles (I used M rims for duals). 70 or so HP is probably all you want to run throught the trans.

have fun - a great tractor

Like most features of our life, few things are all good or all bad, and most such judgments depend on our own perspective or viewpoint. In our particular hobby, we enjoy the nostalgic return to the days of our youth as we recreate many of the scenes that took place on the family farm that served as the stage for the first few acts of the play that is our live ...
