Like they said, an M has what is called single acting hydraulics. Your fix here is to remove the top line from your cylinder( the expanding and retracting end) and either get breather or put a pipe plug in the drill press and drill a small hole in the top. Try to drain as much excess oil out of the cylinder before putting the plug or breather in as when you lift the cylinder the first time, any oil remaining in the cylinder will shoot out the hole you just created with either the breather or the plug.
