I don't know how much more I can elaborate because I got that out of the shop manual (paraphrased of course). The basic idea is you have 2 timing marks. As the engine rotates, the first mark is for 0 degrees advance (for low idle) and the second mark is at the 16 degree mark (for full RPM). You can set the low idle timing without the engine running by finding TDC of the compression stroke on #1. When you are on the compression stroke on #1, line up the first timing mark with the pointer. This should be 0 degrees of advance. Then take the plug out of #1 and ground it to the block with the ignition on (disconnect the other plug wires so you don't run the risk of the engine starting. Loosen your distributor and rotate it until #1 plug that is grounded fires. Lock down the ditributor there. You will be set for correct timing at low idle. Assuming your advance is correct, when you start the engine and run it up to full RPM and check your timing on #1 against the timing marks, the timing pointer should be hitting on the second mark. The book says that the tractor should really be set so when at full RPM and full advance, the distributor should be adjusted so it is firing exactly on the second mark. Hope this helps...BB
