The wobble can come from several sources, and may be a little bit from each.

Check the simple places first (they're also the cheapest and easiest to get to) and remember, every little bit of play removed will help some.

First, remove the hood and take it for a drive. Don't forget to watch where you're going, but pay attention to the steering shaft in front of the universal joint at the front of the gas tank. If the front half of this shaft is moving when the steering wheel isn't....that universal and/or the bearing next to it, is shot.

Next place to look is the little ball bearing at the very front of the steering box on the top of the front bolster. That bearing is not hard to replace, and if it's worn it will cause all kinds of wobble.

While you're at the gearbox, see if the worm and sector gears have been running dry. No oil in there will kill them quickly. Sometimes the sector gear will be a full circle and can be rotated to another place. Don't count on this.

Worn or loose front wheel bearings can cause some of your trouble. Run one front tire up on a block of some sort so the other is in mid-air and shake the free one to check for play. Repeat for the other side.

The bolster has two bearing surfaces. If the other stuff didn't cure the wobble, these bearings may need replacement. They aren't fun, but they aren't impossible for the average guy to do. Search the achives for tips on how to remove and replace these. If you block up the front of the tractor and you can shake the bolster shaft from side to side or front to back, they're shot.

If you replace the front bolster bearings, be absolutely CERTAIN you have the tractor blocked properly, brakes set, leave it in 1st gear and keep any kids away! We don't want to read about you being under the front of that M!
