Wade it sounds like the resistor is going bad. Bypass that and see if she will fire up. When I rewired Old Smokey M a month ago, I had the same problem develop. The resistor was very corroded. When I attached the new coil wire, I apparently put enough torque on the screw that the coiled wire in the resistor partially broke. It would run a few seconds then shut down as if I were pushing in the coil switch. I bypassed it, fired it up and drove it straight into the barn. It shouldn't hurt the coil if you don't run it too long on 12 volts. If that is not the culprit, trouble shoot the coil switch.
