If the pump shaft "rattles around" in the pump it has a problem. If you take the bolts out of the bottom cover you will feel spring pressure from the relief valve spring. The pieces in there are large and easy to find but shouldn't have that much pressure when you get to the end of the bolt threads. Once you get the bottom cover off you can check for clearence between gears and the case, it is supposed to be between .004 to .006. If the drive gear moves sideways, probably the shaft is worn at the outer end or the housing. In that case you are better off to look for another pump as the shaft and gear(sold as a unit by IH) run $250 from them. Shaft could be made by a machine shop and gears pressed on the gears afe keyed and have a role pin in them and are press fit. There are gaskets between the bottom cover and pump body. Clearence between the gears and bottom cover should be 3-5 thousands. You can use plastigage to measure this. If you have more than one gasket on the bottom cover you can remove gaskets to get this clearence. I took one off of my SMTA a while back and the drive gear and shaft would move around in the body, shaft was worn badly on the outer end. I bought a used pump from a salvage yard. If you have the engine torn down be sure to check the main and rod bearings for clearence. I'm also told the cam bearings have a good deal to do with keeping oil pressure up.
