The distributor can be removed and installed wrong in such a way that #1 is now somewhere else. (been there,seen it,done it). Find the #1 mark on the flywheel. Its very tiny and hard to find, so wipe the edge of the flywheel off and use a flashlight. A friend cranking with the hand cranke is a big help. Once the #1 mark is lined up at the pointer, remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. Now you will know for sure where #1 is and can go from there. You might want to remove the distributer and turn the rotor so that its positioned as in the owner/service manual so no more confusion will be encountered. I hope this is your problem since its an easy fix.
