David I think this switch is a carry over from 1940s when generators on some new tractors would not keep battery up all night with lights on bright. I know from experience that lights would sometimes be so dim by 2 or 3 am you could not see to plow. Don't know if lights pull fewer amps on dim though. I never ran with lights on dim as the 6 volt lights were barely adequate on bright.
