I know everyone will jump on this because I always try to give the worst case scenario, but here are the probable courses that may need to be taken..

1) bad detent ball and spring. (if it were this, 4th gear would pop ot also)

2) Bad shift fork..

3) Stripped or severly worn gear.. (coud be the 4th & 5th slider, the input shaft, or both)

4) Worn transmission main shaft.. (It will show a large amount of chatter marks, and most likely 5th gear will also be bad.)

If you do end up having to take the 4th & 5th slider out, I would suggest that you also change the barings for the input shaft and the main shaft.. in total, the new bearings gaskets and seals to do this will cost close to $200 (not counting the gear and forks).. This is the worst case scenario, and to see if the bearings are worn, you will want to try to lift up on the Transmission main shaft (the deck has to be off to do this) and if you can physically lift the main shaft and the input shaft the bearings are shot.. One other thing to note: The bearing spacer for the input shaft bearings is no longer available, so if you need one you will have to get an IH dealer to find one through dealer locator, Depot, or a NOS dealer.. I have a few NOS ones that I will be using later, so if need one and can't find one, then I will either get you the measurements or can have one made for you.. good luck..

This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
