starter and lights dont care. the only important thing is charging the battery. if it was negative ground, i would asssume tht is right for now. start it up and look at the amp meter. also check battery voltage while running. if you ae getting 13.5 (for 12 volt) or 7 (for 6 volt) you are o.k. Like he siad, if you have an alternator then you know it is negative ground. generator could be either + or -.
