I would bet that grey gunk is Aluma-Seal. I would clean out the cooling systen real good and findout why they put that crud in there in the first place. One you get it fixed, put in Distilled water and antifreeze mix and change it every year. If you use distilled water, it will help dissolve any lime there may be inside the engine and head. You have to remember that most farms where the tractor was used have wells and hard water that was put in the radiators over the years will cause a build up. The Distilled water can dissolve the lime better since it contains nothing but H2O and will pick up lime until it can't hold any more.In time it will clean it self out, plus changing it yearly keep acids from forming and eating the brass tanks thin.In the summer you can use straight distilled water but use a rust inhibitor additive or you will get lots of rust formation.
