Diode TA

I am ashamed to ask, been around large IH tractors all my life and do not know how the diode ta works, who came out with it or anything else about it. Someone fill me in? In over 40 years and probably 25 IH tractors we have replaced only 3 ta's, one in a 560, a 1256 and a 1206, the two 12's were done in the mid 70's, don't recall anything said about a Diode TA at that time.
