There are several things that could be causeing it , (1) it is not going all the way in , (2) the gear is woren because that is the gear that was used the most and at on point it was ground off to much , (3) the shifting fork is wore and not allowing it to go all the way in and holding it in place. (4) the ft. bearing on the pinion that goes into the input shaft is bad and causeing it to move up and down . Anyway ya look at it ya got some wrenchen to do , if ya don't fix it and something dropes to the bottom of the case then you will bust the case and somemore gears on the bottom shaft.
