Most people don't realize that the TA was an option on the SMTA as well. Last year I saw one that didn't have the TA handle. I just figured that the TA was out and the owner had removed the handle. When I got to talking to him about it he explained that it didn't come with one. It had the same housings as a SMTA with the TA.

As for comparing the two. We had a 450 and a SM back in thelate fifties. The 450 would work circles around the SM. However, we had quite a bit of engine and tranny problems with the 450. About the time the 560's came out we had to have the 450 rebuilt. They used 560 replacement parts in the engine and transmission. After that it seemed to have quite a bit more power, also never had anymore problems. Eventually we also got a 656 but the 450 would still out pulll it.
