MAN... Last time We had an oil discussion I said just about ALL farmers in the 50's were using detergent oil and by the 60's detergent was about all that was avail. If the engine/tractor has been run regularly and serviced... PUT DETERGENT OIL IN IT. If the tractor sat along the fence line for 20 years or was stuck... REBUILD the engine.... The tractor needed more $$$ worth of repairs than it was worth or it wouldn't have been parked! Your original 1940's operator's manual recommends Non-detergent oil but the suppliments IHC put out in the late 50's & 60's said to use detergent oil. Most farmers bought their oil from their fuel supply company and they ALL made and only handled detergent oil. I remember Dad trying to get a case of quart cans of 30 wt Non-detergent oil for use in oil bath air cleaners.... I think FS had ONE CASE in the whole state of Illinois.
