Something easy to look at which will give you a good clue about whether you're likely to run into a problem with a T/A is the clutch adjustments. The main clutch pedal should have about 1-1/4 inch of free play before reaching the friction point. The T/A clutch should also have free play, on the 300U the spec calls for about 3/16 inch of free space in the T/A clutch adjustment clevis, but this probably varies in other models. Another thing to look at is the amount of adjustment left in the adjustment clevis - which can give you an idea of how worn the clutch is. I've looked a number of IH tractors with T/As and maybe 50% have had one or both clutch adjustments wrong. Took one of these for a test drive, and had the transmission lock up (didn't buy that one).
